i agree & disagree. i would say its a matter of driving habits and what exactly was done to the car/engine/motor that makes it need xw-xx.
IE: civic ex asks for 5w-20, great for daily driving and somewhat street use. but for hardcore tracking whereas your redlining a lot, 5w-30 would be ideal.

pretty cold = 60's lol
pretty cold = 60's lol
60s aren't cold ... negative 60s are cold.
Mobil 1 5W-30 (PAO synthetic) will work fine in almost any climate. It starts out a touch thinner than most 5W-30s but is fairly stable even under hard use and won't thin down much in most applications assuming a reasonable drain interval of 7,000 or fewer miles, depending, depending ...
Most other mass-market synthetics are actually overpriced mineral oil. Not bad stuff per se ... but way overpriced.
However, if you change your oil & filter every 3,000 miles, you'll do fine with just about any 5W-30. My preferences run towards Chevron Supreme and Pennzoil ... both highly refined (Group II+) base oils with advanced anti-wear additive packages (including both moly & boron). These will thin out a bit in 3,000 miles, however, and should be drained soon thereafter.
In any place in California or the southern third of the United States, you could use 10W-30 instead of 5W-30. You don't need that extra thinness at start-up and the 10W-30 is a bit more shear stable than its 5W-30 brother (all things being equal).
Amsoil is pretty good (very stable) ... but it'd be even better with moly in its anti-wear aditive package. Same with "GC" the Castrol Syntec which is labeled "Made in Germany." This 0W-30 is very good ... and a world apart from domestic Syntec 0W-30.
I wouldn't use Royal Purple ... even their synthetic thins out alarmingly quick.
You can search this other forum using the letters "RSX" for lab results of used motor oil (UOAs) for interesting info on oil and evidence of wear:

My favorite 5W-30? Schaeffer Supreme 7000 synthetic (PAO) blend:
