200 Prelude Radio Removal
My son lost battery power and now the radio is asking for a code to enable it. Unfortunately, he bought it used from a dealer and doesn't have the card with the code and S# on it. I'd heard that 5th gen's sometimes have a sticker on the inside of the glove with the code but that's not the case here. I've also heard that you can press 1 & 6 then turn the radio on to get the S# without having to pull the radio. I tried that and that didn't work either. So, if someone can tell me how to pull the radio or if you know of an on-line resource to obtain directions I'd greatly appreciate it. Then, I can provide the info to the dealer and they should be able to provide me the code.
Yeah, I know. I'm trying to find out how to get the code without taking the head unit out or, instructions on how to get the head unit out. Thanks!
The plastic trim around the radio just snaps into the dash. Just be gentle and pull on it or use a screwdriver with a rag wrapped around it to gently pry the trim off. Then the radio is just held in with 4 screws. Thats all there is to it. If its the original radio in the car the dealer should be able to look up the code with the cars VIN number. Thats how i got mine when i replaced the battery in my SH prelude.
Had this happen to me too.
You need to call a dealer w/ the serial code found on the radio itself to get the unlock code (5 numbers). There are two ways to go about this.
1) (easier) Turn off the car. Turn on the car, radio off. While holding the 1 & 6 radio preset buttons turn the radio on. On newer cars this will display the serial #. Call your local Honda dealer and ask them to pull the unlock code for you.
Note - not all dealers will do this over the phone, they don't wanna be liable for giving a potential thief an unlock code. Some dealers (like mine) require that you bring the radio in along w/ proof of ownership (like mine).
2) (harder) Take a flathead screwdriver covered in a papertowel and pry/pop of the plastic trim around the radio. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the radio in. Take radio + proof of ownership to dealer. They MUST give you the code if you do this. If they don't, call Honda HQ and complain.
By taking the radio in yourself you're saving the $90 that Honda will charge to do this for you.
Once you get the code, plaster it EVERYWHERE you can think of.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice folks. I tried holding down the 1&6 then turning the radio on but that didn't work. Now I'm trying to pry off the faceplate but it doesn't want to budge. Anyone have a picture of the back of this faceplate so I can see how it's hooked? Perhaps that will help with my approach. Right now I'm fitting the flathead screwdriver around the outside of the faceplate and trying to leverage it off. I'm using a rag to protect the plastic but it's still causing some surface damage. Don't want to break it so if I could see what the back of the faceplate looks like perhaps I can determine how to best leverage it's removal.
Appreciate your feedback.

Tomakit,
THAT'S EXCACTLY WHAT I NEEDED! My mistake was that I was trying to remove the radio faceplate when I should have been removing the front center console trim. With your instructions I was able to get the radio out, obtain the code from the dealer service rep on the phone and put it all back in working order in 15 min's max. Great help! Thank you!!
