Koni Yellow questions.
my ITR is daily driven and track raced on weekends (circuit).
my race setup is stock except alignment, RA1s and hawk blues.
i was considering the purcahse of koni yellows but have never used them before.
i would probably go with the yellows on stock springs for awhile then possibly revalve and put on real super stiff track springs for next season.
now a main question i have:
koni yellow vs Tein ha?
does it make sence to buy yellows or should i save up and go hard core on susp like jic magic flta2? or tein RA?
is there much of a diffrence for all that money?
i have searched and am looking for answers from people who own yellows and teins. Thanx

i wouldnt say i am overdriving the stock suspension, as i am a rookie and still have much to learn, my susp has a lot of kms on it and i need new shocks, all of the used stock itr shocks ive been offered have had blown/worn rears, its seems to be cheaper to upgrade. i am racing Solo 1 over here in canukville and every tenth counts, if i remouve my cf hood and aem CAI then i have enough pips left to upgrade my shocks, im racing against 328is w/ mods and killer drivers. the last event i came in 3rd with the 328is and impreza 2.5 (modded like hell) in front by 2 secs.. the rest of the pack (mostly hondas) were breathing down my neck by 1 tenth.
here is the standing for the last event (mosport DDT):
GRAND TOURING 2 CLASS
1 Luca Perin N SPDA 00 Subaru Impreza Kumho 58.930 ( 99.170) 100.000
2 Rob McAuley TAC 98 BMW 328is Toyo 59.367 ( 98.826) 99.263

8 Stan Kokotka N COMP 94 Chevrolet Camaro Kumho 65.824 ( 88.197) 89.526
I am in no way a pro of any sort, just looking into optimizing my car to drop my times.

Over driving and out driving, two different things, Or at least what I have been taught.
Over driving= beating the suspension, car and not using it to the fullest potential.
Out driving = using the suspension to the max or going over, without beating the car or tires.

He was trying to be helpful, and his reply was not useless. If you are going to be a dick, I wouldn't count on much help in the future.

They're crap. Unless you like dealing with blown shocks often.

I had Tein HA on my R, sold them and now run Koni yellows. I am much happier.
Koni > Tein for sure. Go post in the Roadrace forum about Koni vs Tein and check out the answers you get.

i recently put yellows on the front of my type r and im purchasing rears today, i like them so far, they have an adjustable perch and you can adjust the ride height. very nice, my current setup is koni yellows on eibach pro kit springs with the perch at the low setting, it dosent ride too low, prob. can fit a finger and a half in. hope that helped some.

My answer would be to look at what the old hands are using and have had luck with, and what they are avoiding and have had bad luck with. So what I'm telling you cannot be substantiated except through experience, and it's not necessarily my experience.
A decent, no brainer replacement damper for a relative stock ITR would be Koni Yellow or Bilsteins, either one. The Bilsteins are a no brainer because they are not adjustable, and they will be able to take higher spring rates than the Koni. In other words, if your next step after this would be to go to 400# F/ 500# R, you will blow the rear Konis sooner than you might expect.
On the other hand, you can have your Koni dampers rebuilt relatively cheaply at Koni, and you would be able to go up to higher spring rates. In personal experience, however, I was blowing rebuilt, SPSS-spec Konis with 750# springs.
I see some Honda Challenge racers who have kept their JIC units and do fine with them. However, on the east coast, so many people have had trouble that they have moved on to something else.
On the DC2 ITR, the Buddy Club Racing Spec coilovers are popular and appear to last through several seasons of abuse. Any of the Showa-built N1 suspensions (Mugen N1, Spoon N1 in various iterations) will also last a long time and perform very well. You will want to order springs for the N1 suspension for whatever you want, and you can go up to 24K on the N1 suspension without having to worry about blowing the dampers.
I wouldn't even think about Motons.
So there you have it, a full range of choices.
Bilsteins: Cheap, hardy no brainer solution with a lot of good references.
Koni Yellow: Adjustable for fine tuning handling, and easily rebuildable for the next stage.
Ground Control + Bilstein or Koni: A lot of people settle into this stage and have a blast forever. 400 F/500R is a nice handling suspension in combination with these dampers and it's not so harsh that your car can't remain a daily driver.
Buddy Club Racing Spec w/good spring choice: Getting pricey here, but a very nice handling racing spec suspension with a lot of good references, and it costs less than some of the other racing suspensons.
Showa N1 (Mugen or Spoon, plus some others): League and series winning suspensions with a real heritage, a little pricey for some people but certainly a lot less than some things I've seen. There is a version of the Spoon N1 that is generally available at an attractive price in relation to most of the others. It's available with a wide variety of spring choices, but is heavier than some of the other N1 possibilities.
Hope that's a little help.
