Bad coolant leak Mysteriously stops... HELP
a couple months ago i started losing alot of coolant and spitting out white smoke. checked the HG and that wasnt it. came to the conclusion that it was a cracked block, and only #4 was clean as a whistle... so we knew where it was coming from.
fast foward to yesterday morning, i put a new plug into #4 cause they get all messed up from the coolant. after changing the plug, i topped off the fluids and drove home. between yesterday and today i drove about 100miles and the radiator is still completely full. and to make sure it was staying full and not refilling, i empties the reservoir.
whatever was causing the leak... it had to be a crack. how can it just go away?
is there coolant running inside the head near the plugs? is the threads where the plug screws into got cracked, could coolant get through? i noticed the threads on the plug itself were getting rusted as well.
wtf is going on here?

have you located exactly where the leak is? radiator, engine block, etc? how much white smoke did you spit out? a lot, a little? how did you check if your headgasket was okay? most of the time, if your car spits out white smoke, it is because you have a cracked headgasket, or a cracked block.
checked the HG by taking the head off and putting a new one on... and i couldnt feel or really see any cracks on the cylinder wall, except for a little blackish line. but that could just be a scratch in the coating on the wall. i couldnt feel any cracks at all.
the amount of white smoke was alot worse when i first noticed it, but now, until it stopped completely... i would fill about a 1qt of water after going to and from work. which is about 20min driving total.
im going on my 3rd day now, and it still doesnt need to be filled.
im pretty sure the radiator isnt cracked, and i know for a fact water was getting into the motor. could the sparkplug have anything to do with it? i had to fill the water that same morning before i left my house to get the plug... then after the plug it just stops.

Well if you replaced the head gasket when you checked the old one I would assume it was the old head gasket leaking. A crack would not just fix itself. BUt a new headgasket will give you the proper seal and no more leak.
Mysteries are meant to be, as long as it works out good who cares.

its not. friends had a cutaway of a head, got lucky with this one. apparently the head is hollow through the center where the plugs go down, and coolant flows around them. it must have cracked and thats how coolant was getting in... and also why the threads on the plugs were always rusted.
btw, i never got it pressure tested. i never had time. its my only car, so i just did the HG in an afternoon.
