Running rich?
I have a 5th gen and when i plugged in the USDM P13 obd2a to obd1, the car backfires all the time. Is there a reason why the P13 can cause this problem?
After switching back to P5M the exhaust is not as loud and there is no backfire at all.

You're running to lean........the OBDII is programmed for 290cc injectors while the OBDI is programmed for 345cc injectors.......
You can try to adjust the fuel pressure or just get some injectors.
