to neone who has....
to neone who has painted their block and tranny.....just curious what yall used as far as preping both or if its even safe to paint the tranny, and what all needs to be masked off when painting both....and sorry if this is in the wrong forum
The easiest way to find out if something needs to be masked is does that part connect to anything?
Just use common sense when you paint. Mask the intake ports, exhaust ports, any electrical connections, and the location of the transmission mounts are the most important. Make sure you add little ***** of wadded up tape into the port inlets to make sure nothing gets in there, including the plug holes if you paint with the valve cover on. Make sure that anything that moves is either removed or masked as well because improperly dried pain can cause an imbalance or some other unpredictable problem.
Take the block to the water if you can't get the water to the block while you clean it up.
The tranny is easy to paint, just use the same common sense that you used while prepping the engine.

Don't paint where something connects to anything else. If a gasket goes there, do not paint as the paint will more than likely cause leaks or improper fit in the future.
Rule #1 when working on anything automotive related. Use YOUR common sense. Don't do anything you think will hurt YOU or YOUR car, even if somebody reassures you it is ok. Many a D and B series have died due to improper maintenance techniques including poor paint jobs on engines, use the right type (heat resistant please and do not use a Krylon rattlecan, I'll smack you if you do) and make sure it's in the right places.
A good type of paint is readily available at Autozone, Duplicolor brand. If they don't have the appropriate color in stock, they can order it for you. Check their website for other applications for some of their products. You would be amazed at what $30 worth of paint can do to an aging EF

Just think, "would I kill my block if I do this?"
If you answer is , I don't know, or yes, DON'T PAINT IT.
You'll be allright, show some photos when it's done, bro!
