Swapping without a hoist/under car?
Anyone have a good link for this? I saw one link in the faq thread that had pictures, but i'd like some elaboration, as this is my first swap, and i want to make sure i do it right (or at least with as few problems as possible
)

man if you "want to do it right" why not rent a hoist, or ask to see if someone in your area might loan you one.. i mean ****.. i've seen some ghetto *** undercar engine swaps and man totally unsafe...

yes man get a hoist if you want to do it right... i was broke when i got my motor my first swap 5 years ago.... and i did it without a hoist... it took me like 2 days when its only a 4 hour job with a hoist... its a lot of stress trying to get the driverside mount above the frame and getting the motor to fit in there its a bitch... just get a hoist man only 20 bucks to rent for a day

Ah, $20 a day, that's not so bad...is that like one of those things where you get the money back after you return it too? I suppose i may go that route after all. I was just asking cause the pictures made it look so easy, and people in that thread had said it was easy as well...they also mentioned that honda certified techs were trained to do it like that (or something along those lines)

yah just get the cherry picker... call like rebel rents or some kind of rental tool place you pay the deposit and get your money back or you pay like a small fee i dont remember.... its much much easier having a picker... unless you have a lift... thats how the honda guys do it they have a lift

I 2nd, or 3rd, or whatever the hoist. Putting the motor in from the top is almost impossible when the motor is complete, especially if you have a turbo setup haning off the front as well.
i know my friends and i pulled his car up on a huge parking spot curb thing and dropped the motor out through the bottom and drug the motor out from under it. We still had to use a hoist to put the new one back in though, just seems like a real pain to do it without one.
man my homboy always pull honda motors from the bottom it never took me and him anytime just have to know what you are doing plus hes like 335lb's so he has a lil muscle..lol
i've done a swap without an engine hoist. If you have a decent jack, jack the car up as high as you can at the bumper, then place your jackstands in the correct location behind both doors. Then just work back and for from side to side until you get your car to the high to clear the engine. Perfectly safe in my book, and you don't need an engine hoist.
Slide the engine in underneath on a creeper, or a skatboard or whatever, and lower the car onto the engine. Easy as PIE. You don't have the issue of goiing PAST the motor mounts and then coming back up. I would never swap an engine in from the top. Doing it from the bottom was INSANELY easy. It just doesn't make sense to put them in from the top. I even had an entire turbo kit on my engine, including an edelbrock manifold which is super long. I would do it from underneath.

i did my last swap with a hoist it took me 4 hours.... single cam to single cam... had to switch over the tranny clutch and flywheel and exhaust manifold... i dont have any ac and when i take the motor out i pull the radiator with it... 1 bolt easy makes nice for more room. but ive helped a friend that wouldnt take his radiator out and it took him like 8 hours because of the room issue

exactly, just do it from the bottom, and take out the radiator anyway, how hard is that, it's like two bolts.

I have also done it both ways. If there is a hoist available then use it but if not then just do with what you got. as long as you have a couple of jacks and some thick wood it would help
We always use a hoist and we always drop the motor out the bottom. You take out the lower and rear mounts leaving only the two upper mounts on the side. Taken the hoist and wrap the chain around your radiator support. Lower the car till the oil pan is touching the ground then remove the final two mount bolts. With the hoist still attached to the radiator suppsort lift the front of the car untill you can pull the motor out of the side usually under the wheel well. Move the motor out of the way then lower the car back down onto the jackstands. to put the motor back in just do everything in reverse. It is much easier to do it that way then to lift the motor high enough and get it positioned right from the top. Done this on about 10-15 swaps on D and B Series.
