simple q. will a d16z6 dizzy fit and run right in a d16y8?

No, reason being is that the y8 dizzy is OBD2 wiring, while the z6 dizzy you have is OBD1.

No, the reason is that it just doesn't fit correctly.

This is correct, and they can be repinned/rewired for whichever harness you are using...
