Default LS/Vtec with B18b block and b16a head, do i need to adjust cam gears to make them line up to tdc??

like it says, i am in the process of an ls/vtec build and i was curious if i used a b18b block and a b16a head,

the block has been decked and the head has been milled. not sure of the specs on that.

but will i have to adjust the cam gears in order to make the cams line up to tdc, i thought i read before that i might have to. but i was curious if i needed to adjust them in order to make them right and if so which direction?

the cam gears,if they are the stock ones, should have little "up" arrows on them, make them point up.

yes, whenever the deck height is changed the timing is thrown either advanced or retarded. basically lower deck height advanced timing, raised deck heights retarded timing. this is where the cam timing can be seen to be generally only 1/2 degree or so, but when piston to valve clearance comes into play you don't want a costly learning experience.... hope it helps!

well it has dished pistons in it so i hope that hte piston to valve clearance is ok, so you are saying that by using the ls block which has a taller deck then the b16 block then the cam timing is going to retard meaning im going to have to advance it which means i'm going to have to turn them towards the firewall. the only thing is how will i know if the valve to piston clearance is going to be an issue if i do decide to adjust the cam gears? how far is too far?

they are just under 9:1 compression pistons.

its not just ls/vtec, its the milled head and decked block you have that is gonna make them not line up, and what you need to do is rotate crank pulley to tdc, look at the gears, guestimate how many degrees there is before the lines of the cam gears should line up and advance the cam gears, move the actual cam its self towards the front bumper. say for instance, my setup was milled a little bit as well, so my cam gears dont quite line up either, so what i did was looked at it and decided, there is about 2 degrees of rotation before they line up, so i advanced both cams two degrees to compensate. Now I consider that mark, my 0,0 for my cam gears. hope this helps.

for every .011" milled; you advance 1 degree
