Default Shift Lock..is there a purpose or need?

Ive been having problems with my shift lock (94 civic ex coupe automatic), i took out the solenoid so wouldnt need two keys to drive my car. Is there a point to the shift lock, is it even needed at all. I figured since most older cars and even some newer cars dont have the lock, the whats the point on fixing it....any thoughts?

ever wondered what would happen to your tranny if you threw it into reverse on accident while driving at 70 mph? that's the purpose of shift lock.

Just go for MT . You seem like a pretty impatient guy, i wouldn't bet you don't hold your hand on the shifter. Chaka brah! J/k 4 life. But seriously MT drastically changes driving experience.

I removed that solenoid too when it went bad. $200 something from the dealer, and I couldn't be bothered to go to the junkyard for it since it serves no real purpose (for me). It doesn't stop you from throwing it in reverse at 70mph, that's what the button on the handle does.

The shift lock is a safety feature that prevents the car from being accidentally knocked into gear or neutral when parked/started.
The lock is put on to prevent people from doing stupid **** and then suing the manufacturer for any injury or damage.
Try starting your car with it in gear, not fun.
I you are the ONLY driver of your car, do what you want.
If not, just fix it, it's a risk you don't need to take.

The only reason i was impatient with this topic this time was because for the last few topics nobody replied...

And yea the button is the thing that i dont even touch when im driving. But i do understand the point of it now, so honda doesnt screw themselves...but i dont shift like crazy when im driving (i.e. when ppl go from D1 to D4 to simulate stick, i just drive to get myself to places)
