Default Using an Impact Gun for removing the Crank Pulley

With reference to this thread, which to it's credit is mostly about whether or not you should you a damper type crank pulley or not also hits on the issue of using an Impact Gun for remove and reinstalling your crank pulley. Some state that the hammer effect of the Impact Gun creates stress on the bearings and thus makes them more prone to failure. I've never heard this. And it seems, even though it is argued as an aside in the thread, that pretty well respect honda-tech members are on both sides of the argument.

Now I've used one about I don't know 20 or so times to remove and replace my crank pulley and I haven't had my bearings fail. But I've also not broken down my motor to inspect them.

Discuss my knowledgeable friends, discuss!

Not likely. Those bearings are designed to take thousands of pounds of force from the rods and last for 100k miles. You'd have to put a truely large impact wrench to hurt the bearings. I'd say you would twist off the pulley bolt long before you hurt the crank.

honda dealerships use impact guns all the time.

i learned the hard way that a really big impact gun is the way to go. if the gun is big enough it will only take a couple zaps and that bolt spins right off.

I think the issue is more of when you are putting the bolt back on w/ the impact gun.

oh my bad - i wouldn't use one to put it back on IF that was my only option, i'd turn the air pressure down and use a low setting....hey wait a minute - the thread title says 'removing'...that's where i got confused...
