going to junkyard need advice
im going to the pull a part junkyard to see if there are any b18s in good condition to use in my 89 dx. was wondering what everybody thought would be the best things to do/check on the engines to see if they are worth buying as this is my first attempt at buying an engine from a junk yard.
1. See if the crank turns over when you turn the 19mm crank pulley bolt.
2. Pull the spark plugs out and look at them closely.
3. Smell the oil(make sure theirs oil in the motor)
4. Make sure theirs no water in the motor besides the spark plug holes
5. Oh yeah make sure theirs not a hole in the block, lol.
6. Take off the valve cover and check the head to see if the oil was changed regularly.
7. Check mileage also, but considering people swap out clusters now of days you never know how many miles our on the car.
8. Just remember the car is in the junkyard for some reason. If it wasn't in a accident be weary of the motor if you decide to pull it.

so true. at my junkyard, a car came in IMACULATE CONDISION (it was a ford so dont get too excited
) and it looked bran new but the motor was blown it had a sky blue-white thick cloud out the back. ifourced the head off and there remnance of a head gasget and no valve oil seals (found in exaust!) and 1\2 of the valves were burned (with a nice hole in them)
the point: a motor may look in good shape but untill u look inside, udont know what u got.

I went to one here in Atlanta, same chain. Most of the b18s get picked quick or are blown. Dont expect to find anything spectacular, honestly. I was able to get DA rear trailing arms with discs and calipers, DA front knuckles with discs and calipers for 120. Also got a 4040 proportioning valve. Also saw a civic with a DC Sports header. Sadly there were 2 civic ex's both were missing the driver side knuckle.

Just be patient and go to the junkyard frequently and you will find what you want.....DON'T RUSH. Or you will spend more money in the long run getting a crappy item up to snuff.
