Lots of people were curious about this, so I might as well let the cat out of the bag...

your results may differ.. also, using different weight oil will yield different results..

Test motor: My B20/B17
Oil system: Mugen oil pan, GSR strainer, modifed and ported oil pump(Endyn reworked), t-fitting on sender to side of head and to pressure gauge(5 feet total)
Oil used: Honda 5w20 non-synthetic
All number are in psi, and all readings are done on fully warmed up engine..

RPM-(ITR filter)(RSX filter)
Idle(25psi)(35psi)
2000rpm(50psi)(65-70psi)
3000rpm full throttle(75-80psi)(90psi)
3000rpm cruising(80psi)(90-95psi)
5000rpm + full throttle (85psi)(100psi)

Both oil filters yield about 75psi when starting a cold engine.

Now, it's your call if you want more or less oil pressure. Now you know.


For the record, I felt no difference in power for better or worse.

you are using the mechanical oil pressure gauge it take it? you should test the hamp filters ips has also, they are much smaller than stock b series filters

so would running the higher oil pressure on a stock motor hurt anything??? i know the hamp are smaller (r&d has them) to help keep oil pressures steady. maybe we can now go to acura and get the rsx filter to get the same results.

no higher oil pressure shouldnt hurt a stock motor. some people say it can cause a small loss in topend hp, but mike k seems to say NO to that aspect

 

What are the chance of blowing a gasket (pick one) or an oil seal at 100psi of oil pressure?
Probably much higher?
Anyone? Any MEs here?

 

Not sure if there's a chance to blow out your gaskets.. but the main reason I did it was the fact that when I built my bottom end I put all my clearances on the loose end of the specs. On a stock motor, I doubt you'll see benefit from it because the clearances are so tight already.

 

I think I'll just stick with OE filters for now. Intereting post though Mike.

BTW, I'm the guy who fried the MSD and needed al those parts last week.

Mike I am curious to know your opinions on the Honda 5w-20 oil that is used. I think I know why Honda is pushing use of that oil, but personally I would think that oil is way too thin for a regular oil. I would feel more comfortable if it was a semi-synthetic or full synthetic though. Not that I am a synthetic oil pusher, I actually prefer to use Castrol 10w-30 regular oil. It probably might be good or a hp or two on a dyno but it sounds kind of scary to me to use on a long term basis. Any information you can share with us about this oil, has Honda provided you with any information on it ?, any info would be interesting. thanks

A friend who work at a Honda dealer told me that they just use the 5w30 regular oil from Canadian Tire. I think that should tell you if you should listen to them or not.

 

i have a 01 accord and it says to use 5-20. i thought that was really thin oil too, but i guessed thats how they get the ULEV ratiin and the gas mileage out of that car. and one more thing, that oil is hella hard to find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got it from the Honda dealer here in Australia. When I went to change oil I found this:

Was damn nearly impossible to get off, hence the mangled filter. The HAMP filter I had was made in Thailand, the JDM filter is made in Japan by Toyo Roki. Its much larger than the HAMP filter.

i tried the rsx filter. it started to bind as i was turning it. not sure if its just a bad batch...but it didn't work for me. anyone else try besides mike?

 

Like I said, Lip.. it's probably a bad batch in your neck of the woods.

The threaded holder is the same part number on Integra and RSX.

BTW, there's like 3 or 4 guys here that are local. All running RSX filters.

 

i'll try another one. rather...a third because the 2 i bought both didn't fit. thats why i said...maybe a bad batch. hey...what do you want from my neck of the woods(Princeton NJ)

Why would I want to raise my oil pressure in my b20vtec?

 

Like I've stated before, it's not always necessary to do it on a particular motor.

If you feel you could benefit from the oil pressure, go for it.

On a B20 VTEC I would do it, for one, being the external oil line. The pressure isnt as high as a GSR/ITR to begin with.. so an RSX oil filter would be good.

If you built your bottom end on the looser side of the clearances, the increased pressure will be a good idea, too.

 

So how do they achieve this extra ~ 15 psi of oil pressure? Is the filter media the same as in the 'regular' filter, or is there just less of it?

I'm sure honda wouldn't use a filter that didn't do its job, but it makes me wonder what was sacrificed.

 

Just like putting your thumb over the end of the hose. It sprays harder.

Honda made the oil pump on the RSX differently, so it doesn't have as much drag on the engine. Less drag I guess made less oil pressure. SO they compensated for the difference by using a smaller filter to bring the pressure back to normal specifications. Same oil pressure, but more horsepower now due to less HP used to run the oil pump.

This isn't 100% true. Just my theory. I think this is why. So does the master tech at Honda.

 

Seems to me that the RSX filter just does not flow as much, thus higher pressure in front of it...
