Default tranny removal? why so difficult?

hey everyone,

i've got this crazy clutch squeek that i've determined to be inside the tranny housing (i've replaced clutch slave, master, and fluid). I didn't want to pay anyone to open the tranny just to grease a few items, so i'm thinking of opening my tranny one weekend. I own a acura service manual too.

everyone tells me tranny work is a pain in the neck. Can you guys with experience tell me what is so difficult about removing the tranny (or reinstalling) for that matter? I've done some car work before, thinks like sway bars, and shocks and springs, not much engine work tho.

one more thing, what makes a jack a tranny jack? where do i support the engine with a jack?

Thanks!

I think what makes it so difficult, if you're only working on jackstands, is the fact that the tranny is quite heavy.

its a pain cause you need to remove the tires, wheel nuts which are staked and usually a bitch to get off then, pull out axles and then hang the knuckles out of the way, then work on your back to get the bottom bolts off then the case cover, then the friggen pin!!!!!! in the shifter, the shift stab. bar, then the wiring, maybe the starter, the you can drop in on your chest in your on jackstands!!!!!!!!! this is not fun, then try putting it back in place by yourself and not bending a dowel.
P.S. I forgot the motor mounts in there.
get and have a friend help you!

Tranny removal is so difficult due to many hidden bolts and useless support brackets. Make sure to release three mounts and support the entire engine thouroughly. It shouldnt be too heavy so lifting and dropping shouldnt be that much of a problem.

EXACTLY! there are a lot of hurdles to overcome for the first timer .....
that fawkin shift pin is HELL if you dont have the right tools or clearance to get a hammer in there to pound it out with a punch-pin.

it is a serious task, you need a manual to do it right.
bu tonce you finish you will be very satisfied, I know I was.

mojoGSR is currently swapping out his blown (not FI'd) B17a, and the axle spindle were so damn hard to get off. The passenger side nut took 4 hours with a dremel and a chisel because we didn't have air tools.

The engine also has to be lifted up to unattach the tranny motor mount. It is a lot of work. You might as well, do all those engine mods you have been wanting to do while the motor is out.

ok, the manual makes it sound so easy...but now that i've heard from u guys...i may think it's worth it to pay someone to work on this one....not many of my frienz are into working on cars so i'd be alone working on this...

i think i may reconsider...i too would only work with non-air compressed tools. plus i'll prolly need to go back & forth to the shop to pick up tools i don't have

ok, thanks for the input guys!

none-VTEC is ryte, it doesn't take THAT long and it isn't THAT hard. It sure is a biitch but it's really is possible to pull out the tranny, and swap in a new one in like 2-4 hours if you know wat your doing and have the right tolls on hand. and air tools really aren't nessasary either. i guess they help but i pulled out motors b4 w/o the use of air tools. if you have them then lucky-@$$. if not, be a man!

It really helps to have a tranny jack. My main problem was trying to realign the tranny tied with rope to a regular jack. It would have been easier if I had a cherry picker or something.

By the way Chris, I don't think you have to lift the motor, but just support it with a jack/jack stands. I don't think you have to remove the motor mount brackets but I'm not sure of this as I just lifted the whole thing at, motor and all.

Here is the spindle nut in question. When torching, breaker-barring, and soaking don't work and you don't have access to air tools, here is the final resort after the damage has been done. I highly suggest NOT doing this under any circumstances if at all possible, and only do it when you have NEW axles lying around because you are bound to ruin the old ones.

Umm...it's gonna end up being a lot more money than that if you get anything halfway decent. I wouldn't use an air gun that cost less than $70 or so.

Completely your call though...I'm just a big fan of spending the money once and getting something nice.

Precisely. And why not just use a dremel if you've got brand new axles waiting by the wayside? It was a pain in the ***, but I don't have the luxury of $300 around right now. After college I guaruntee that will be one of my first EXPENSIVE tools.

Hell the air gun i bought cost $200, but hey it has 600ft lbs or torque in reverse. Now if only my compressor was better so i could use higher psi.

Snap-On air gun with 175 PSI going through it... I'm yet to find ANYTHING that it won't take off (or destroy)

hahaha I have an CP 1/2 inch that does like 1100 ft/lbs in reverse! If the bolt won't come off it will just twist off the end of the axle

they're either 120 or 130 ft lbs i think..Just use two people, one to press on brakes, and one to use a wrench to take it off, while using the wrench i tuck a piece of like 1 1/2 in. pipe around the wrench to get my torque, works great. But i hated removing the tranny. those stupid bolts under the starter, the mounts, and all the dowel pin holes you have to have lined up make you so mad!
