Its cause you change the boiling point of the fluid when you take the rad cap off and then the fluid blows out.

Could be a block in the system. How old is the radiator? Lines? Motor?

rad is brand new. motor has 156k.

lines are as old as the engine.

could i possibly have air in the coolant system from when i changed the radiator?

I know you said it's new but you might want to try another radiator cap. If the headgasket was blown I'd imagine your radiator would have air in it.

I did. After a flush and changing out a few spongy lines/hoses, my problem went away. Just my .02, though.

which spongy lines and hoses?

when doing a flush do you just open up the bleeder on the head, and keep the rad full?
