OT - I have never seen this done on the track...
Has anyone ever listened to music during a lapping event? I was just thinking, I have never heard anyone blast by with music coming out of their window, but I have also never heard it mentioned as a no-no or a black-flaggable offense.
LOL
That is a interesting question! I imagine it's a no brainer that's why it's not mentioned.
Of course, if you COULD listen to music, what would you listen too on the track?

I, of course, am too concerned with my flying elephant career to be concerned with such foolishness.

There was at least one entrant in the IMSA Renault Cup with us who used to listen to tunes while he was on the track...

I don't have a stereo in my car but I have heard the sounds of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart coming from r2x's Miata.
Downside of music... you don't hear the "noises" made by your car as well; tires, engine, etc. If you listen to music (which I don't suggest as a student), just be aware you are losing some valuable inputs.
I would never do such a thing during a fast lap/fast group because it's too distracting, but just out for touring laps in Beginner is another story. All of the following (or a mixed disc of them all) are quite nice to drive to:
Miles Davis- Kind of Blue
Phish- A Picture of Nectar
Cake- Fashion Nugget
Primus- Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Soul Coughing- Ruby Vroom
Oh yeah, if I was going to listen to something in a fast group (which I wouldn't), it would probably be some kinda crazy, high-bpm jungle techno like Dieselboy. Or more upbeat Jamaican dancehall ragamuffin, of which there are several examples. Or, possibly, in the right mindset, Rage Against the Machine.

Hey Jon, do you remember that guy at an autox maybe last season in the blingin beige Civic hatch who bassed out during his entire like 2 minute autox run? That was great
Indeed... Wagner and Van Halen? I'm thinking the tracks changing between "Ride of the Valkyries" and "Girl you really got me now"
I find music to be distracting, but I think that's because I tend to try and sing or drum along with whatever is coming out of the speakers. I'm just one of those musical types of people. If I WAS listening to something... it'd be one of the following:
Bush- Machinehead
Powerman 5000- Bombshell
Master of Puppets off Metallica's S&M album. (In case anyone freaks out, that is the album they played with the San Francisco Symphony.)
~Chris, who taught himself enough piano to be able to play the kickass piano opening to Van Halen's "Right Now"
PS- forgot about Rage... hmm... Guerrilla Radio I could deal with.

I did it during a few autocross runs last year. Gives you that great 'Iron Eagle' effect. Wouldn't do it regularly though, especially not at a track event.
There is a local guy here, who has a race prepped 325 BMW, widebody, 400+hp M3 motor, etc, a few events last year he had the radio on full blast and STILL got FTD!
I find it helps me focus. I don't find it distracting at all, but for people who do find it distracting, definitely don't listen while driving.

I couldn't hear it over the engine.

used to do it all the time. I have a video of summit point; Tears for Fears in the background thanks to a mike sitting next to the speakers! Stopped doing it when I missed a bearing going bad in the motor. May start again when new motor is broken in. Not recommended to new students!!!

PS I would listen to
Metallica - Creeping Death
Sponge - Plowed
Pennywise - F Authority
R.A.T.M - Vietnow
Rob Zombie - Dragula
and a Cool down lap with
Van Halen - Panama
certain pair of SE-R drivers listen to music during lapping sessions...
With the "muffler" (wink wink) I now have, it is a bit difficult to hear music anymore.

And I am the same as Di and TypeRmsm, music helps me focus. It occupies the part of my mind not involved in driving that would normally wander and in and of itself become distracting.
I don't do it all the time, only when I feel I need the extra motivation to concentrate. And it's usually at such a volume that I can still hear the engine and tires. (Although more and more, my knowledge of tires is felt rather than heard...)

I think it would be kind of distracting. If I did listen to some while racing, I would have some-
Tool- Ticks and leaches
Incubus- various songs
and H20

I think I would be distracted too, but if I did it would be mostly old and new punk like Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, and Dag Nasty for aggression. Or alternately, some good abstract instrumental hip hop or trip hop if I needed to concentrate on being extra smooth that day, like DJ Krush, Dj Vadim or Portishead.
