mpg! what the hell?
some people on this site say that their 6th gens get 24-27 mpg on the streets..... mine gets like 17 max with k&n CAI and 2.25in custom exhaust! *damit* i duno if the auto tranny has anything to do with it cause i try to switch at 3000 rpm cause friends say that u dont loose any gas at that rpm........ thnx for the input. and what rpm do u guys/girls shift at to save gas? cali gas is getting high up there.
17mpg is more like what my girlfriend got when she was driving a big-a$$ SUV. Even my last car, which is about 400lb heavier than my Accord with an engine comparable to the 4-cyl would get 24-26mpg around town with no problem if I drove it like a granny. If you're not accelerating hard, then something is probably wrong.
Keep in mind that a CAI, by definition, is intended to supply the engine with cooler and denser air. The K&N is also designed to increase the air supply by flowing more freely. Now, here's the thing. One might think that you could get better gas mileage through reduced intake restriction with these mods, but that's not true because the vast majority of vacuum losses are caused by the pistons working against the throttle plate, not the up-stream intake components. So the net effect is decreased fuel efficiency because the engine needs to inject more fuel to maintain the right a/f mixture with the greater-than-stock mass flow of air. Does that explanation make sense?
17MPG is still much lower than I would expect your modified intake to be responsible for. Do you have big and/or wide wheels? Those will kill efficiency. Has she had a tune-up lately? A really inefficient ignition system will waste gas and rob power through lousy combustion.
Also, is the poor fuel efficiency a new thing or was it this way before the mods, too?
I hope this helps.

dude, thats horrid. an auto will get a lil worse mileage, but its minimal (1-3 avg)..but 17 max?? maybe ya need to go have it checked by a mechanic. does it blow black smoke (running rich)? maybe you have a bad sensor somewhere that is tellin your computer the car is running lean, thus adding more gas when it shouldnt? maybe?

i was getting consistantly 32-34 on my 96 ex doin 70-75 w/the AC on. hell, i was getting 22-24 in my 88 5.0 mustang!

it took 3-4 mpg off my accord when i put 18's on it..same overall height but just wider and heavier..i get 30-32 driving slower than a granny now

In a city, with gas prices over 2.30, i've learned to coast. I'll get up to speed and then get off the pedal. If youre encountering a lot of stop and go traffic and you're heavy on the pedal and like to speed, that's a good reason. You could also have a bad 02 sensor.
The slower your speed the better the fuel economy will be. I believe the EPA standards for highway is 45-55 mph, and since no one goes that slow on a highway, you shouldnt expect those numbers.

i remember hearing that VW got into a bunch of trouble for stating a model of there car got over 40 mpg..but in reality nobody could get it..it was found out that you had to drive 40 mph to get that mileage..
thats why i always check out what car and driver or other mags get out of the car,not what the manf.states it will get. the prius doesnt get the mileage its suppose to either..
but still,17 mpg? somethings "badong".

The govt has all tehse standards but so many loopholes
I rely on Car and Driver numbers myself.
Oh, and i'd suggest maintaining a good tire pressure as well, that hurts mpg.

the filter is clean, the exhaust is new....... 17's are on it, no wider (in fact lighter) than factory and the way i check the mpg is at the gas station. i read the amount of gallons i used and the miles on the odometer that was just used and i divide the miles over the gallons. i duno how u guys/girls check ur mpg, but damit is it the........ i duno its got like 30kmiles. oil check? go to dealership? thnx for the input accord community.
this last tank I got 22mpg on almost all city driving. I just completed a trip to MN and I got 30 driving an average of 80mph with the air on. 1994 LX with auto trans
What exactly will the Accord do when the Cat is starting to go bad? Really how will the car act?? I have some hesitation at low rmp's and have fully tuned her the F up...

when you cat goes bad it will usually plug up and it will take forever for your car to get to speed. It will appear as though your engine is lacking power and is not willing to rev up when under load. I had a cat plug up on a 1994 olds 98 regency and all I did was cut it off and replace with a straight pipe. Now a days this is illegal and it will cause you to fail emmissions testing
