Default Fuel Pump problem, starts pumping whenever it feels like it!!

My 89 Civic LX very sporadically wouldn't start, and it would be the fuel pump that wouldn't pump fuel and you could notice since you wouldn't here the whiz it does. I just put the key in off and put the key back in run and i would hear it pumping and would start the car normally.

Well now, the fuel pump almost never switches on, you turn the key to the on position and the fuel pump will not activate it if it don't feel like it, and i could try from OFF to RUN position a million times and it won't turn on, and you won't here the whizzing sound and the car won't start. So I take I walk, take a dump and call some random chick and try it again and WHAM is magically starts pumping and you hear the whizzing sound and the car starts no problem at all.

What could be causing my fuel pump to turn on when it feels like it?

Some type of damaged relay?

I don't think it's the fuel pump itself cause once it's activated I can take a 200 mile trip with no problem, the problem is at starting the car.

My car is an 89 CIVIC LX 1.5 L Automatic.

Please help!

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the fuel pump. If the main relay is clicking everytime and the wiring is good, chances are it's the pump itself. My pump would allow me to drive to where ever I was going but once I tried to restart it would not turn on. It did this to me twice leaving me stranded and the second time I was convinced it was the pump itself after measuring voltage at the pump. Being left stranded is not fun at all! Especially because of an inexpensive fuel pump. I bought a Walbro for like $79 shipped from a Honda tech vender and everything is fine. Check that main relay first though, it's very common for those to go bad.
