Rear Left Tire Humming?? Know Why???
Hey all,
Recently my rear left tire started humming. i am not sure how this happened but am growing concerned. The tire appears to have a slight amount of camber and is wearing the inside edge of the tire much faster. The humming starts at about 30 and gets louder as i speed up. When i turn right (transfer weight on the tire) it gets louder and disappears when i turnd left (transfer weight off the tire).
There does not appear to be any suspension damage, however that is what i would suppose the problem is. any thoughts?? all help is appreciated
Chris

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

either that, or you have a flat spot on your tire.....been doing ebrake slides?

check for feathering on your tread. run your fingers across the tread blocks, and if they feel like they're not even, like each block has a slight slope to it, then thats feathering. it usually indicates poor alignment, to keep it simple for u.
not to be the guy that shows up late and repeats what everyone else said, But im gonna have to say its the wheel bearing. Ive never heard of a bad alignment make a noticeable humming noise that goes away or gets worse with weight transfer.
Hondas have sealed hub bearings, kinda like skateboards, and they arent serviceable, so you have to replace the hub.

I thought that was only for the rears? I've replaced my front wheel bearings (PITA) and it didn't require a new hub, just a shop press.

it's not the alignement, the tire is pretty new, and it's not the pressure. i check that regularly.
there does appear to be a noticeable amount of camber however (not extreme, but prolly a degree or two) and the inside shoulder of the tire is wearing faster then the rest of it?
could a wheel bearing cause this? it seems more logical to me the a suspension member would be bent or something. i could not see anything with just a visual inspection however.
all help appreciated. thanx guys keep it coming
oh and how much would the hub cost to replace??

one quick way you can check is to jack up the wheel that humming...grab the wheel at 12 0'clock and 6 (vertical) and see if theres freeplay. there should only be a tiny tiny bit. if no play at all, thats even better. if there is, then yeah...its your bearings. try spinning it too
i have to say its the bearing. A bearing at diff weight loads if bad will intensify and decrease in noise. My right rear was so bad that when i had all the brake components off and it was just the hub and i spun it with my hand it growled and had an uneven feel to it, like he hub was roling on rocks.
Humming sound @ or above 30mph. Shift weight side to side and noise goes away. Possible wheel bearing noise. But you have to remember that according to Honda of America, Honda bearings were designed as a constant load bearing. Meaning that shifting weight from side to side doesn't always prove that the wheel bearing is causing the noise..
You also have to take into consideration that feathered or cupped tires will cause a wheel bearing like humming sound at a certain speed. But I haven't yet seen it where the noise goes away with weight shifting.
Another thing to add, I did have a wheel bearing problem where shifting weight didn't cause the humming to go away. But the noise was more prominent during acceleration above 30mph.
Have fun..

yeah, only rears- sorry about that
its been awhile since ive done it, but the rear wheel bearing/ hub assembly was right around 130 bucks, for just the part. If you have someone else do it, make sure they torque the rear stub-axle nut to spec and not just impact it on, i made that mistake once and the new bearing went bad within 2 months due to being overly tight.

One more question for you guys. i don't really have the money right now and mines not makin too much noise. how long can i let it go? will it end in a catastrophic failure like my wheel locking up or anything?
i have this problem too, For about 1/2 yr now. and it gets worse as time goes on.
I use the ebrake and swirve side to side and the noise gets worse. when i swerve left it doesnt do it, but right it does, whirrrrrrinnng noise, i cant wiggle the whell tho. I am buying a new rear hub and i will see how that goes. Im sure its the bearing since when its under alot of load and when i apply the brakes, it gets worse because they clamp onto the rotor and causes more of a load in one way...
i dont think it could be the rotors or the brakes...
Mine is also the L/R...

eventuly the bearing will lock up and the tire wont want to move. Mine was VERY audible and it hadnt locked up but i already had the rears torn down doing random stuff and had a hub so i replaced it. If you need any suggestions or tip on getting it off ill be more than happy to help
