bad news bears: headgasket problem
Sup fellas.
I'm working on an 87 Integra LS.
I was replacing the headgasket and I was torquing down the head bolts
in 2 steps...22ftlb then 47 ft lbs.
I got to the last bolt on the first torque sequence and I got to maybe 12 ftlbs
and the bolt broke loose.
I took the bolt out and some of the threads from the block were on the
bolt
.
Can the block be saved?
I've looked into heli-coils for something and I can't find anything that will
work.
Apparantly the head bolt is 11mm.
I went to a special bolt shop and they only offered heli-coils for 10 and 12mm.
I've heard that I can use a time sert but I don't know where to find one
for this specific bolt.
My question is have any of you guys ran into this problem with the d16a1 motor
and how did you fix the situation?
thanks for the help, Chris

do not use helicoils on this application at all. i work with a machinist who has taught me many many things, and one is that for that amount of torque you need, you will prob rip out the helicoil. sorry to say, but the only way to correctly do the repair is to get it re-filled with weld, bore, then tap. good as new! i am in the process of doing the same thing to a b18c1 i just purchased.

So in other words I would have to send the block to a machinist?

well, can you weld or have a friend that can weld? all that needs to be done is preheating the block, then fill with weld, then bore, tap. i guess it sounds easy to me because i have the tools to do it, but a machinist would not be making you pay too much, so start looking locally!!!
