Cat-Converter Question
Should I gut my stock cat, get a new aftermarket cat (like random or catco) or just run a test pipe. I have a 2000 ex with a d16y8.
I still want it to pass emissions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

get a high flow cat. i ran around with a jdm d15b straight pipe with new headers down piping and 2 1/2' catback piping. LOUDEST ******* civic it had the highest pitched whine to it. it was so goddamn loud i could hear my exhuast over a damn harley lol. use a stock if u wanna keep it quiter but if u go no cat ur gonna lose back pressure and u dont want that lost of hp
Yeah, if you want it to pass emissions still than you have to keep the stock cat handy for when test time comes around, and you'll have to put it back on for the test. Therefore, my advice would be to NOT gut the stock cat, because then you'll realize three or four days before the test that you need to find an original cat to test your car with, then you'll pay out the *** for a new one when you can't find a used one when you need it most.

Don't **** with your stock exhaust piping or else you won't pass emissions. I recently had a Megan full catback on my car, but I got pulled over and got sent to the state ref. so I took off my catback, and put on my stock piping with a highflow cat w/ an ES muffler and I failed to pass so if you're looking to pass emissions then keep it stock man.

you could probably get an obd2 carsound/magnaflow cat and still pass emissioins. If i were you i would just stay stock because its not worth the 1-2 hp and your car will sound like crap. It will also smell nasty. Its up to you though, good luck.

I did the same thing, but on 2.25" piping. you're absolutely right, I was right next to a harley on the freeway and didn't notice till I looked over lol

it's illegal [at least in Texas] to sell used cats, and I dunno if I'd buy a used one anyway. emissions/noise forced me into a catco stock replacement and I'm very happy, my $.02

to be honest I haven't had enough experience with the different brands to reccomend one over another. I can however say that a catco cat made my car pass emissions and I'm sporting a brand new inspection sticker on the windshield

Purchase a metal core Cat - I was able to pass AZ emissions last year with the 2.5" one installed.

Stop spreading misinformation.
You will not lose backpressure or power running a test pipe instead of a catalytic convertor.

I lost backpressure and a little power down low when I was running with the test pipe, however on the freeway and at higher r's the car felt much more responsive and the butt dyno registered a couple extra ponies.

Well I know that Jersey is a pain in the ***, and my entire exhuast system is modified. DC 4-2-1 to a JR cat to a DC TCS exhaust, and I pass just fine. It just depends on whether your catalyst is working properly. I know that if there is NO cat, then you will probably fail emissions upon visual inspection.
On a sidenote (and not to jack the thread), my secondary O2 is dying every summer since installing the cat and throwing a CEL for a random out-of-bounds reading every now and again. Honda tells me that the cat is performing (which i knew) but that "the sensor isn't tuned right for an aftermarket cat," which I think is bull. I'm just running a little rich, but a year on the sensor, wtf? This is the 2nd time
