oil consumption on type r engine
my type r motor had a oil change just yesterday with mobil 1 10w30 synthetic oil and I installed 4.4 liters (I have an external B&M engine oil cooler) and when I checked the oil lever yesterday it was slightly overfilled. Today after driving for 160km's the oil level is now at the proper amount. My car I don't think burns oil b/c there isn't ANY blue smoke and the engine only has 37, 000km's.
I was however, driving my car in vtec up to 8400 rpm a few times today so think that is what ate the oil.
I've read and have been told in the past the all type r engines eat oil. Is this true and if so how much?
thanks

I've notices about a half quart difference between a cold (unstarted for some time) ITR motor, and one that had just been turned over or recently run.
I suggest you check it at the same time/condition every time and add oil accordingly. Just my humble opinion, but factuably verifiable.

VTEC operates on OIL just as your normal driving runs on GASOLINE.
No blue smoke when hitting VTEC? Thats odd. 99% of ITRS do and you can smell it aswell.
Mine burned 2 litres within 1000kms. I am getting a whole new shortblock replaced. I have a pimping 04 Acura EL sittin in my driveway now.. loanercar

whoa.... lets not let the blind lead the blind here. Throughout the RPM range you car is constantly running on gasoline. When vtec is engaged it is due to oil pressure, but VTEC does not run on oil as your motor operates on gasoline at idle or "normal driving" as stated.

My car begs to differ. But, you are quite correct. If you search you'll find a bunch of threads on oil consumption, and preferred oils.

VTEC burns oil. I don't care if your C5 is brand new, it will burn oil. That's why R owners have to kep their eyes on it. Otherwise you'll end up like that dumbass who rased his R with an oil light on and popped it. Keep a Mobil 4.4 in the your trunk and add when necessary. Check it at least once a week or just before and after the track.

Its a great idea to keep an eye on your oil levels while at the track! Before is great, but during is better....for obvious reasons of course.

That is not because of "vtec", it is because of rings or seals. It is considered industry standard for a engine to burn a quart every 1800 miles. A type R is not a stardard car, basically a racing engine in a production car. So just follow the owners manual.

I usually check mine every other day after work...
I believe that checking the oil when then engine temp is cooler shows a more accurate reading.. not right after running the car hard
just seems to be at different levels for me

^ makes it sound like oil is taking place of gasoline from the way u said it

Your car consumes too much oil because you have a problem with your rings.
Hence, why you're getting a new shortblock from Acura.
If your car had a problem with it, you can't speak of it as if it was normal and the gospel truth for B18C5's.

^agree....
I think a lot of it has to do with the way people drive their cars....without an aftermarket gauge set to monitor oil and water temps.... IMO it's pretty bad to get on it till the temps stabilize.
The most extreme case of this was a buddy of mine who would simply beat the **** outta his car from the moment he turned the key in the mornings....
Another guy I knew used 20W50 or was that 15W50...year round....either way.... because of the pretty frigid winters in Canada, I was willing to bet his motor was suffering from abnormal wear...which led to strange consumption issues too.
Something else I notice with other Honda owners is some of them tend to like idling them for prolonged periods of time....(to enjoy the AC or listen to music in the parking lot etc) we believe that's what led to the 4L every 3 fills on the tank on my friend's Prelude motor....
I'm sure there's a guy out there who fits all of the above description...
but you do any of the 3 mentioned - you're almost guaranteed something will go awry.....
