Default n00b question on rims

Okay, I have never bought rims before, and I'm considering doing it for my 01 Civic.

I was in PepBoys the other day, and I saw rims being sold for as low as fifty eight US.

Now...I'm no sucker. What's the catch? Are they poor quality? Bad quality finish? When one buys rims, is one paying for the name brand, the aesthetics, materials, performance on the track versus the road? Etc?

These wheels are crap. In general, ANYTHING sold at Pep Boys for a Honda is crap. In regard to your questions:

Are they poor quality? - Yes.

Bad quality finish? - Probably.

Wheel cost depends on many factors - materials, construction processes, finishes, countries of origin, name brand, etc. If you are looking for some suggestions for nice, affordable wheels, I'm sure many here can lend a hand. In the mean time, I can tell you without any question that the OEM wheels on your Civic are better than the $58 Pep Boys garbage. Remember, stock is better than crap.

Thanks, Nosser.

I was tempted by the price, but like I said, I'm no sucker. I want something nice-looking but good quality at an affordable price. I AM a Honda-owner after all.

So to narrow down the discussion and move completely away from the Pepboys issue - what manufacturers have people had good or bad experiences with?

remember, you get what you pay for, and if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

if you want quality rims, you must define your sense of quality. do you want something lightweight for track racing? or do you want something that just looks nice. seeing from you're coming from, i think you should look at rota. they make fair quality rims with many different designs. many of them are replicas of higher quality rims, but many honda owners go with rota because they're not super cheap, but they're not expensive either.

hope that helps.

If your looking for a cheap but good quality wheel, you cant go wrong with a set of Rotas.

I concur with the Rota comments. Some people will bitch that they are not "real" because most (if not all) of their designs are basically copies of more expensive wheels, but from a cost vs. quality standpoint they are difficult to beat, and the fact that they are copies means they look good, too.
