Default Exedy Clutch Problems - Lots & Lots Of Heat !!

Hey folks,

I was hoping someone would know what would be causing a problem I am having. I have recently fitted an Exedy Stage 1 clutch. The clutch has done approximatly 900 miles and the bite point began to move up the pedal.

No problem I thought, pretty normal. What was not normal was the way the clutch point *kept* moving, up and down the pedal. Then I got a noise coming from it suggesting the thrust bearing was knackered.

So anyway, the tranny was pulled and the clutch investigated. The housing of the clutch is like a flame tip burnt blue, and the whole casing looks burnt. No racing starts or heavy driving was attempted, revs were changed high but no slipping had occured, the flywheel looks good and the pressure plate ok.

The clutch looks pretty shot to me, I was just wondering why this has happened ? The thrust bearing does sound quite bad, but I do not know why.

Bot the master and slave cyclinders were checked, they are fine and doing what they should.

Anything you guys could offer would be great, obviously I'd like to avoid this before I buy the next one.

Cheers,

- Prob

Ok first of all things,

Where did you buy the clutch? (third party, fake clutches will ruin your tranny, REALLY fast)

Hope its the "real" Exedy Clutch!!

Second, did you install it right?

Third, you should take out the clutch and worry more about the tranny, then reinstall the clutch again, take ur time, 5 hours to install a clutch is fine. You would rather spend 5 hours on a clutch instal rather than replacing your tranny.

Try to reinstall it, OR mine as well but a new clutch!

Heya man,

Ok to answer your questions. Firstly as far as I am aware it is genuine, it has all the necessary markings and was from a reputable source. Secondly, it was installed correctly I am sure, thirdly a shop has checked the tranny and said they can hear or see no obvious signs of bearing failure, and that the noises it was making sounded like a dying clutch.

I shall be putting an AP Racing clutch in this time round, and getting a shop to do it, this way if they stuff it up, it's their part and their labour that stuffed it. Nothing like a nice fail safe eh ?

Any further ideas as to what could cause this ?

I'm plain confused.

I think you over torqued the flywheel screws or pressure plate, causing it to go bad, maybe installation error.
Get a new clutch if you pulled the tranny out, not fun doing it every 900 miles

Is this the only thing that could cause that problem ? I noticed also the thrust beaing was noisy, again, could it all have been caused by that ?

I guess that makes sense, but I didnt think over torquing the flywheel would cause that ? I can see why the pressure plate may do it.

Thanks for your input, I am pretty sure I torqued up to spec but will have to check.

you have to understand, torque wrenches get messed up and operate badly after time, they have to be re done every now and then for accuracy.
If you bought a full clutch kit, you should have changed everything which is clutch disc, pressure plate, resurface flywheel, throwout bearing, and the pinion bearing which is the flywheel bearing.
If you didn't do this, do this, and do it right,
make sure you grease the tranny shaft, that could be another issue, that you didn't or forgot to do
it is 90lbs i believe
for the flywheel and pressure plate
