What do ya think of this engine deal?

What do ya think of this engine deal?
Kid rolls up to my shop looking to sell his engine.
B18B1 bottom end.
He claims the head is from a 2000 si (it is a DOHC VTEC)
claims Type R cams
AEM cam gears
Hydro tranny with cable conversion
Hasport mounts and linkage.
Looking to sell it for a grand.
It's in the car, shifts smooth, but at high rpm's....it puffs black smoke.
The wiring looks like hell and looks extremely ghetto rigged.
So, does it sound like a good buy, or should I pass it up?

if the engine is still in the car, its likely not stolen unless the whole car is. Grab the vin# and run a check. I would say $1k isn't too bad for all that, but its not great. To remedy the oil leak problem, your probably looking at another ~$300 to do a minor rebuild.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but black smoke is running rich. Oil is blue.

well you can't always trust people that they are seeing the rihgt color. If someone posts, hey my car isn't running, i'm a noob, i see black smoke. I'm not going to cross out the option that the smoke could really be blue or white, ya just never know what people think they see.
