i have a 99 ls, and when i star the car, somethin in the engine bay makes a loud squeeking noise for 2-3 seconds. while its making this noise, the tach will jump up to 2-2.5k rpm, then drop back down to normal. can someone help me out? thanks

 

you need to narrow down where the noise is coming from. pop the hood, and have a buddy listen to it when you start it. to me it sounds like a belt, but i dont understand the idle jumping.

 

check your A/C belt, Alternator belt, and P/S belt.

 

my friends car does this too, we narrowed it down to the ps pump. it pretty much screams for 3 or 4 seconds when she starts it, then it goes away

 

i think the loud screeching noice when you first start your car is the alternator belt...

 

so do i have to replace the belt or adjust the alternator? thanks for the info guys.

 

same wit my car, but it only happens when i turn on the AC... it'll jus stop squeeking after my car warms up so i think its the ac belt

 

yea id say check the accessory belts

 

Its more than likely just a belt.

 

make sure to use belt dressing for all the belts, keeps them from making that horrible screeching!!!

Check all the belts and see which one is squeeking. Have someone start the car while you examine your accessory belts.

replace it. belts over time will get brittle and stretched...

 

lol...make sure its the right size belt...
