The bearing that comes with aftermarket clutch kits, that's the pilot bearing right? Is that the same thing as the release bearing? Just two different words describing the same thing?

 

A pilot bearing is a regular style bearing that is installed in the flywheel to support the main shaft of the transmission.

The release bearing, or throw out bearing, is the one that gets installed between the transmission and the clutch, on the main shaft. This is what pushes on the pressure plate when you push the clutch in.

 

Ok, now the pilot bearing ususally comes with aftermarket clutch kits correct?

Does it look pretty similar to the release bearing?

 

Most clutch kits will include both bearings. No, they don't look similar. The pilot bearing will be about 1.5 inches in diameter whereas the release bearing will be about 3 inches in diameter. The release bearing will fit on your slave cylinder inside the transmission. The pilot bearing, as mentioned before, will go on your flywheel.

Ok, my kit came with the release "throwout" beaing.

I called inline pro and they told me the pilot bearing is actually a part of the flywheel that can be replaced if worn. I'll look and see if it's on the flywheel when i get home.

 

and knowing is half the battle.. G.I. JOE... hehehee.. sorry I just had to get that out...

Whenever i do a clutch i would always want to replace that bearing just because the tranny is off, and the flywheel is off. What better time.

FYI, k series flywheels do not need a pilot bearing.

 

another thing, you have to remove the flywheel from the engine in order to remove the pilot bearing. FYI. you can tap it out from outside to inside. (when the flywheel is off ofcourse.

Is it in the crank? Something has to support the input shaft... either a bearing or a bushing.

Also, when you change a clutch, its also a good time to get a new rear mail oil seal. Especially if there is a lot of miles on it already, it only takes a few more minutes to change.
