Default HI Im New - Buying a Teg Type R (need advice)

Hi!

Right im looking to buy a Integra type R iv sorted the insurance (about to turn 21 its a nightmare). I have sourced a ITR for 5k it has done 98k is miles an issue with vtecs? i heard there **** hot and honda have not had one back in ten years?? basically im after some buying advice ill do a HPI and check all the obvious stuff but iv never owned a Honda before and wondered wat to look for when buying?

The one im looking at at has had one owner from new on a 98 plate and tells me its motorway miles, the only thing wrong with the car is a stone chip and a worn drivers seat... The car is totally standard and he wont take no less than 5 for it...

Any way rant over !!

Any help / advice would be great

Thanks !!

Doesn't sound like too bad a price, depending on the conversion rate between USD$ and what, Euros or Pounds.

Have you taken it for a test drive yet?
High miles aren't necessarily a bad thing, but might work in your favor if you were to try and get the price down a bit. Good luck with it.

Ha, I have a friend that graduated from University of Bath. I was out there once for a week, almost 6 years ago

Look for maintenance records. As long as you change the oil periodically, Honda motors are generally good for many (200K) miles.

Check for burning oil in VTEC, in higher RPM's. Accelerate to redline in first, make sure there's no cloud of smoke behind you. Also, if you can drive with a tailwind or no wind, accelerate in first, stop, and smell for burning oil with the window down. Something like that. Some black smoke is normal, that's from running a bit rich at full throttle.

Dont buy it??

Other advice is to run it thru vtec at standard operating temprature and see if it smokes ??

PS- take the car to Honda/Acura and spend the $100 bucks, or $5 in your currency and get it checked out.

A mechanic I work with told me this is a problem with honda DOHC motors.. he told me the only way to fix it is through a block rebuild
ive noticed the problem after running mine hard for a couple of weeks.. it doesnt cook oil, but the oil does depreciate a bit
how widespread is it? (do all ITRs have this problem?)

Yeah, a lot of ITR's burn oil. Not a big deal until you get to higher consumption rates.
