Default Extended Warranty?

Hi all,

My wife inherited her 2003 Accord from her father and we are looking into getting an extended warranty. The dealer where we live is asking $1766.00 for 4 years 48,000 miles... The car has only 8000 miles on it now. She puts on about 14,000 a year. Is that price good or are we getting robbed. Also can someone recommend where we could get a good deal on an extened warranty or is one not neccessary on this great car.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Personally I won't buy extended warranty for any car.
People buy Honda for the reliability, right?

The only reason I got an extended warranty was because my 03 has all the buttons and I didn't want to pay to keep all the buttons working. What options does it have. If it's an LX or something without the roof/NAV/changer/etc I wouldn't worry about getting an extended warranty. I'm not worried about Honda mechanical stuff breaking.

If you do decide to get one-which it sounds like you already have-I would go to your bank-I went to mine and they do sell the warranty separate of a loan-not sure if all banks do that. I didn't go that route because I got it Honda certifed through the dealer, but it was only $1200.00 or so for 4yr/48,000 for my car. The mail offers you will get for warranties are always very expensive.

$1700+ can go quite a way towards repairng the odd-ball failure that may pop up. I would take may chances and do without the extended warranty, based on my 20 years experience with Hondas, and the warranty companies' ways of disqualifying coverage for failures.

This is just one old guy's personal opinion, but I've bought 100,000 mile Honda warranties on two occasions and on both occasions it was completely wasted money.

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies. I had my wife read them. She is very implusive and wants to pull the trigger on the warranty. The Honda Dealer called back and reduced the price to $1,200 for the 4 year 48,000 miles warranty. I think it is a waste of money because they are such high quality cars, but she is pretty bull headed about peace of mind.

Kaman, if you could please check on the price at your dealership, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again for all your help.

Steve

We aren't talking about 90's Hondas unfortunately. They don't make them like they used to. I have a sneaking suspicion that my '00 Integra will out last the '05 Accord.

I just bought my 04 accord ex 4I auto a few weeks ago
34,000 miles for $15.9
I bought extended warrantee for additional 60K/5yrs for additional $1,800.00
It's seems like a lot but.... makes me feel much better since i do drive a lot.

my 1993 accord had 260K on it, ran super strong until it got into accident.

I'd like to believe that my 04 accord will do just that or beyond 260K but for some reason they don't make them like they use to. More comfort seems to have somehow compromized on reliablity (not just talking about the drivetrain)
I'll be very happy if my 04 accord goes to 180K w/out any major issues.

i used to sell cars... and 1200 for extended warranty is pretty good. specially for the amount given. dealerships actually pay like 6 or 8 hundred for it so their hardly making anything. and if u ever decide to just cancel it theyll re reimburse you for whats left. so its a good deal at 1200 or try to hustle them a lil more

Agreed. And extended warranties are like paying car insurance. If you don't need it they feel like a waste of money but on the occasion you do need it they can easily pay for themselves in one visit.

My only question would be what warranty company? Hondacare is one of the best I've ever dealt with as a service writer. Some are downright shady.

yup. it will normally re imburse it self in one visit. some dumb @$$ down my street had a brand new accord and tried o be a slick guy and put 110 octane in his car and blew the motor. and the extended warranty gave him a BRAND new engine for like 200 dollar deductible

I own an 03 (EX V6 with all the added stuff) and it is now 4+ years old with 50k miles. No problems to report except for the radio display, which Honda extended the warranty on without me having to pay for it. You make up your own mind, but I waisted my $$ on an extended warranty on my first Accord in 91, so I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice.

I know that trannies were a big issue wiht 6th gen accords, but I heard that some of the early model years of the 7th gen also had some trouble?

I don't know, but that might be something to look into and consider the warranty for.

Yes, they had a recall on the V6 automatic transmissions. The fix must have worked because I haven't seen much about failures since then. Sure, there are still some instances, but I think they are no more than say 4th or 5th gen failures at that point. The 4cylinder automatics don't seem to have a problem at all, and weren't even part of the recall.

I have an 06 V6 6mt as my dd and I already had the power steering pump replaced, passenger and driver side door panels replaced, motor mount replaced. so who know whats down the road. I would get the warranty if you can spare the money

If you do want to get the extended warranty, you should check out whether the dealership offers discounts for membership in Costco, Sams, or a credit union.

There are also companies which offer extended warranties that may have better pricing. Sorry I can't think of the names of some of them now. Perhaps some of the others can help out here.

Well. Speaking for a 2006 6-6 Sedan and a 2006 6-6 Coupe, both with very high mileage, we haven't had the very first issue of any kind.

Actually yes they are, and although relativley rare, we've done our chare of F23 trannies.

I've personally been involved in numerous instances where extended warranties pay for themselves in spades, so yes if I was planning on purchasing a vehicle, I would most certainly pick up a 100,000 mile warranty, but... BUYER BEWARE, I'd only purchase an American Honda backed 'VSC' policy. Having the advantage of working with Honda directly with extended warranty claims is incredibly easier and less hassle prone than the optional independent warranty companies your dealership may offer you. Take it from somebody with first hand experience, stay away from any policy that isn't from Honda, you'll thank me later.

I believe BLKFSH was referring to the 03-07 4 cylinder autos which do not have any consistent problems that I have seen in the almost 5 years I've worked for Honda. I believe the V-6 recall he was referring to is the jet kit update.

Hondacare is still owned independantly from Honda. IIRC it is run by GE warranty. But I would certainly agree that it is one of the best contracts out there.

United Car Care and Universal Underwriters are good as well depending on which package you purchase.

I bought one with my '08 Accord. It is 100% cash back at the end of the 100,000 mile coverage, if it is not used. The incentive is that you will take care of your car and pay out of pocket for the little stuff in order to preserve the 100% refund. They come out ahead by having $1700 for 5 years invested at 25% interest.

I see what your saying but I have definitely got my money's worth on my extended warranty for my 03 accord... I've had my AC die, power steering issues and also radiator issues... so it definitely saved me a lot of money...
