Default vtec kickin in too early?

i know this might sound stupid but i'm new to this and im not sure if its right...i got a b16a (obd0) in my EF a couple months ago but everyones been telling me that vtec kicks in too early.i have the dx model so no tachometer but people have been estimating around 4000 rpm..is this normal or bad...if bad what could be the cause of it?? all the motor has is intake, dc sports 4-1 header, aebs intake manifold..seems like its lagging since sohc civics are either keeping up or beating me??o well i believe it is the y1 tranny. thanks for the help everyone

Yours is at 4000rpm???? It should be around 5200 RPM. I have a 1st gen OBD 0 Pr3 ECU, and Vtec kicks in at 5200 RPM. Just get a Vtec controller if you want and set RPM for the VTEC yourself, but it should be around 5200 stock.

you cant tell with no tachometer dude. does it feel like it lags when it kicks in the picks up 1000 rpm later?

EDIT: if you post up what tranny u have we might be able to tell u what speed u would be at in a particular gear at 5200 rpm and that would be the cheapest way to see when ur VTEC kicks in

Why would he feel a lag? With stock cams you can have a smooth x-over even at 4000 rpm.

Well of course there is a limit... If you're running CTR cams, then I normally set the x-over point to about 5000-5200, but I've set the x-over as low as 3300 on stock cams without any dip on the dyno.

i agree with 91 civicex. first get a tach or something to read out engine speed to find out where it really kicks in.

Get a tachometer somewhere. A B16 swap w/o tach, wierd.

No human can tell accurate rpm by just hearing it.

My pwo had the xover at 5200, when I swapped to my now PR3 it dropped it down to 4500. Without a tach you wouldn;t be able to accurately tell
