Default OT: WRX ?

I just put down a deposit on a 2002 WRX wagon to use as a daily driver and I know some list members also have WRX's and I am curious how you like them after having them awhile? I am still keeping my R to race but I have to have a vehicle that my wife can use when I take Her truck to tow with.

I don't own one, but I beat the **** out of the sedan on a 45+ minute test drive. For what it's worth, here is how I would rate it in various categories out of five stars:
Launch = (hold on TIGHT)
Acceleration = (bad turbo lag below 4k)
Braking = (sufficient for street driving)
Handling = (it weighs 3,500 lbs...)
In conclusion, your wife will like it just fine, and you won't exactly hate it when you go to pick up groceries!

it actually weighs about 3300 lbs

I saw a stock manual wrx wagon run 14.4 sec. at the track. Not bad for a wagon!!

My Dad has the sedan. It's nice but I thought it was too soft, too quiet and way underbraked. Nice power though and you can throw it into a four wheel slide a la Ronin pretty easily.

The stock Hitachi 13G turbo is boo boo! Must get Unichip and turbo upgrade. Also getting rid of the 3 cats might help too. It's a great car for the money, I just wished it wasn't so ugly.

I have one. Stock it is ho hum I think but you can get monster power very easily. Once I get mine tuned I'll have around 370 HP on pump gas. I have the following mods:
Blitz sus intake
PE1818F turbo
Blitz SBC-id
Uppipe
Downpipe
Titanium exhaust
STi injectors 565cc
PE fuel pump
Unichip
Blitz BOV
Blitz front mount intercooler
Ask me for dyno charts after March 8th if you want to see what I'll be putting down.

I guess I must be the only one who can type www . subaru . com into my computer. When I did, I found out that the manual transmission WRX wagon weighs 3,165 pounds and the automatic transmission WRX wagon weighs 3,220 pounds.

That's pretty heavy. Power-to-weight ratio is worse than the Integra Type R. Compared to the ITR, the WRX has 16.4 percent more power, but 20.0 percent more weight.

We just recently bought a WRX wagon for daily driving. Let me say it is extremely fun to drive. Things I have to say after only a few weeks of owning one:

Pros
Power/Torque (above 3k)
Great seats
Easily modded
Total sleeper
Not as many wagons
Awd launches bring a big smile to your face

Cons
Transmission is very rubbery
Gas mileage (~24 on the highway, still new though)
Brakes not bad but compared the R it is different
Lots of body roll

For a little money it can haul serious @22. It makes me look at 4 cylinder turbos (ala 1.8t gti turbo differently).

Each of the cons can be fixed, most very inexpensively, except the brakes.

Josh

Am I the only one here who likes the look of the WRX? I KNOW you all dont feel the same way about the STi!!!

AWD + Turbo...thats all you have to keep in mind. Sure, the lag is noticeable, but I dont think anyone will argue here that the looks or lag will take away from the fun factor. Numbers and analyzations aside, the car is a lot of fun, and Im SURE wont stay your "stock grocery getter" for long.

Thanks for your opinions.

I really like the looks. Everything else I will agree with. Stock it feels "Soft" in all areas but as Dan said it has huge potential. I saw one in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago that had the gold prodrive wheels and the windows lightly tinted. It looked fantastic. I like the sleeper quality of the wagon and I think it is a good value but stock it is not even close to as exciting as my R.

My wagon has curb weight of 3165 lbs. I have shaved off over 100 lbs already in removing cats, ti exhaust, removing bumper beam, lighter wheels and soon suspension. I hope to get it down to 3000 lbs. the sedan you can definately get under 3000 lbs which combined with the high torque of the motor provides some decent power even if the power to weight ratio isn't as good as the ITR stock to stock. That combined with the easy upgradability make it a great value in the import market I think. Is it as good a road racer as the ITR? Heck no, but it is fun and can be made very fast with the practicality of a 4 door or wagon.
