airbags
ok so I'm desperate, I'm looking at a 1990 si and I really really want it but.....I'm only 17 and my parents are saying no cause it doesn't have airbags! ya flame away.... So my question is, is there any way to put a driver side air bag in this piece? Any help at all will be appreciated, thanks
You may be able to run a steering wheel off and EG or EK (not sure) and install and configure all the sensors and wiring... but there is no way I would trust it without testing.
no CRX or Civics 88-91 have airbags. i can't imagine how one would be able to install airbags into a non-airbag car !?! you may want to consider 1994 and later civics and delsols if airbags are a requirement for the car you will be driving.
btw: my understanding is airbags work with an explosive charge. >that sounds a little scary.

+1 i'd say if you gotta have bags look at the 92s ups honestly I wouldnt trust a DIY airbag job.

Thanks for the help
I already have a 94 hatch and i just want another civic with a swap already done so i don't have to go throught the trouble of doing it and ef's with swaps are within my price range but eh's with swaps are not.
Did any integra or legend during 88-91 have airbags that might be able to be swapped over? thanks again

Yes, its not impossible. Would i trust it? Not sure, I've been a passenger in a civic that hit a guardrail head on doing 35-45 and the airbag didn't deploy... but if your parents are so concerned, tell them you should have 5-point harnesses and a cage, safer than an airbag with all these SUVs around.

So true, ask them if you can have it if you put in a cage, 5 point harness, race seats and wear a helmet with neck protector at all times. LOL
If it's safe enough for the race track it's sure as hell safe enough for the street. Just tell them race cars don't have airbags.
And i believe a Integra steering wheel with airbag is the way to go. You'll need to fabricate your own mounts for the impact sensors in the bumper however. That shouldn't be too tough. understand, an airbag is just a explosion on a switch, the switch is the impact sensors. Impact BANG
simple circuitry here. If you cross wires durring your installation or set off the impact sensor when connected
You'll need another steering wheel . They're expensive!!!

Hmmm good idea...would 5 point harnesses and a simple roll bar be as safe as a cage or near it?thanks

A full cage will of course be safer, and if it has the nascar style side bars, then even better yet. I really like the way a cage stiffens up the chassis also, but be sure to pad the area around your head, it could really do some damage to your head otherwise.

what would be a ball park range for one either custom made or bolt on app? thanks man

Autopower has some decent cages and bars, figure about $300 for a 4 point bar and about $700 for a cage. Custom will cost you more, but probably fit a bit tighter. You can also probably get a custom one to be a little lighter.

thats not bad at all on the pricing, thanks for the help man
edit
do you have a link to any of their products? I tried autopower.com but that wasn't it. thanks again

or, if you're really intent on a car like this, don't settle for something you don't want cause you're in a hurry. wait less than a year till you turn 18 and then get a car without one. personally, i think if you have good seatbelts and wear them, you shouldn't need airbags. i've been saved by my seatbelt before, 50mph collision. i was wearing my seatbelt. if i would have had an airbag, the only difference would have been i would have broken my nose on it. not for me.
wow, some real bad advice being given here. only person giving a lick of sanity is bagpipe.
bunger, please do not recommend a FULL rollcage on a street car. it doesnt make a car safer. it makes the car more rigid during impact, but the DRIVER needs to be protected. that means always wearing a HELMET.
a 4 point rollbar, good seat and 6 pt harness is what will give you the most protection for a street car.
retro fitting airbags? come on. dont even think about it. perhaps its "simple circuitry", but theres a lot of consideration involved, im sure. these are explosive devices. you dont want it going off when you dont want it to. heck, im not even a fan of airbags, i could go on a huge rant... but ill leave it at that.
kid, just listen to you parents. get a 92+ hatch and enjoy it.

Tyson, the reason I recommended a full cage was for the side impact protection. I don't care if you have the safest helmet in the world, an SUV hitting you from the side (say it ran a red light) will do a TON of damage. I'm not saying that the cage with save you, but it sure as hell will give you a better chance.
The crush zones of older cars aren't nearly as well engineered as new cars, infact newer cars are more built like they have a build in cage, they are VERY rigid round the passenger area. Because of this, getting in an accident with a newer car is worse than getting in an accident with an older car.
A cage provides protection in side impact and roll over, as well as frontal impact. If there is an SUV 4 feet into the side of your car, you're not going to live.

An airbag system is really not that complex, its a very basic system, if the SRS unit detects impact over a certian amount, it deploys the airbag, which in an accident slows your body, thus spreading the impact over a greater amount of time... which is the only way for you to lessen the force. If you break it down into basic ideas, its:
Force on body = amount of force in accident / time
That is why there are crush zones... you can't change the amount of kinetic enegery in both masses (cars), but you can lengthen the time it takes for that energy to disipate.
