Default Accord acting weird

Hi n00b here.

I had the timing belt replaced on my wife's '98 Accord EX V6 3 weeks ago. It was replaced by a Honda dealership close by. Everything was fine until yesterday. The car while in park or neutral will rev up and down from 1000 rpms to 2000 rpms. Of course when you put it in drive it accelerates. I checked for a loose vaccum line but I couldn't find anything.

Has anyone seen this before? Maybe the T.P.S.? Where is the T.P.S. located on these cars?

Thanks in advance

The fans come on like they are suppose to. The rpms jump up and down non-stop from 1grand to 2grand.

This happened to my buddies Civic after we replaced the dead battery. He gave the car to his sister and I never did find out what caused it. I'd be interested to know what it was. It would idle ok for about a minute or two then Rev up and down from 1K to 2K.

It could be your Spark Plugs or plug wires......when was the last time they were replaced? It could be a very dirty air filter.......it could be a clogged PCV valve...........it could be clogged fuel injectors........or clogged fuel filter, or dieing fuel pump. It could be your ECU, but you wouldn't want that to be bad, because it's expensive, unless they cover it under warranty.

Or, since you just had your timing belt changed, did they change your water pump at the same time? If they did, they would have to of drained and refilled the cooling system. When you refill the cooling system, if you don't bleed the air out of the system, you'll get pockets of air travelling around in your engine........hot spots if you like........that will certainly make it rev erratically like that.

Yeah they replaced the water pump when they replaced the timing belt. I called the dealership and explained that this started happening after they replaced the timing belt. The service guy told me that he has seen this happen before. He didn't elaborate on what the problem was. He just told me to bring it in and they would take a look at it. I really hope they don't try to charge me more money if it's something that they caused. After all I just spent over $800 getting the timing belt, water pump, and other maintenance done.

well, if air in the cooling system is the problem, it won't take them long to fix, and it won't cost you anything.

I'm betting that's what the problem is. Usually there's a little bolt that you unscrew to bleed the air out of the engine, but I don't think there is one on the Accord v6.......I know there is on the 4cylinder models.

Let me know if this is the case......I'd like to know what you find out.

You might have a prolblem with your fast idle valve, idle valve, or TPS, but I would take a look at the fast idle vale. If it is open too wide, then too much air would be entering the manifold at idle.

This is really weird.
I took my wife's Accord in to the shop this morning. But all of a sudden it wasn't acting up anymore. I went ahead and took it in and of course they said nothing was wrong. Would air pockets in the coolant cause this? Is it possible for the air pockets to work themselves out? It seems as if there is no problem at all now. I'm totally confused now.

Oh yeah, that could totally be the case. Sometimes it will burn off on it's own, and other times it will need to be bled.

See that's something I would check when working on my cars......especially when draining the cooling system, but these shop mechanics just want to get it done, and get it out......quick as possible.

They also replaced something in the ignition.
Not sure what it was.
Something about a recall or something.
Anybody know anything about this?
What could happen had this not been fixed?
