I have a first gen b16 and i notice im leaking fluid for the sensor that is close to the clutch arm on the tranny. is this common and how do i fix it? should there be a washer or gasket or something between the bolt and the whole?

Sounds like the reverse sensor for the backup lights.

Drain the trans fluid, take sensor off, use teflon tape on the sensor. Install sensor and install fluid

i know the d series transmissions have a washer and the service manualy says to replace it everytime it is removed, so i'm guessing it's just some sort of crush gasket or somthing. i'm not sure about the b series though.

Yes, it's a crush washer, much like you find on your oil pan drain bolt.

I'd have to say replace the crush washer and use teflon tape.
