torn axle rubber cover
well my control arm ball joint seperated so today i tried rolling it across the street and i guess all the movement of the suspension because it was not hooked up to the control arm made it move back and forth. so i was taking off the control arm and i noticed my axle had popped out of the part closest to the engine. i also noticed that the rubber cover was torn, well i was able to put the axle in fine, nothing was messed up on the connecting parts but just the boot is torn so some grease had come out. is it safe to drive the car with a torn cover.....can i replace the cover? if so, some sites would be very helpful! thanks for your help....these forums are awesome

yup
yup
how hard is it to replace the inner boot, since its torn could i just grease up the boot, slide it on the axle, connect the axles and then tighten the clamp?

you will need an air gun or it's going to be more painful to change the cv boot unless you like working under the car.
tools that are needed:
ball joint puller or pickle fork
32mm socket to unbolt the axel nut (impact gun recommended
needle nose pliers
~the inner hub has 3 roller bearings on the shaft that just slides out of the inner hub
~remove the bearings and clean up the top portion of the shaft
~remove c-clip with a metal pick (or anything that's small and pointy/strong
~pull out the piece that holds the bearings
~slide boot in

i have a seperated ball joint so i figured id fix the cv boot first and then put in the new control arm with ball joint, i dont mind working under the car, i really dont want to bother taking off the axle right now, it seems as tho i can slide the boot on the axle and the part closer to the engine and then connect the axles....idk you tell me

Yes, this is one part that can't afford to be damaged for long while you drive on it. A tear will cause the grease to leak and it can damage the axel.

well ever since the ball joint seperated the car has been sitting there, but from my stupidity about a week ago the axle pulled out and tire the boot in half, the joint is basically two ends with these things that come together and the boot with grease goes around it? so the car hasnt been driven in about 2 weeks, and its just sitting there in my yard waiting to be fixed...
i know this is probaly getting annoying...sorry....uhh so the roller bearings are inside the boot? and once i remove them i should be able to slide on the boot and then put the roller bearings in? im confused as to where the bearings are...

the roller bearings are inside the (inner hub) the boot just keeps the grease insde to lub the bearings/hub to prevent metal to metal contact.
first there is the shaft...then there is the rolling bearing holder (y shape and it slides on to the shaft, after that there is a c-clip that holds the roller bearing holder to the shaft. the roller bearings go on to each part that sticks out of the Y and the whole thing goes in to the inner hub.
if you don't understand a part then ask.

alright so i looked inside and i pulled out this bearing with 2 rings in it, and the inner ring moves around....so basically this is what was inside my inner boot: axle with 3 ***** at the end, that wierd bearing, and then a big thing with 3 *****...so is there more than one of these bearings? because this is all i found in there....the c-clip is on the outside of the boot?
it also seems impossible to do without taking the axle nut off and pulling out the axle and sliding it on......please tell me theres a way of doing it without that....another question is on the end of the axle coming from the caliper where that 3 **** thing is, is it possible to take that off the axle, slide on the boot, put it back on and then do the rest?

ilook at the end of the shaft that goes in to the inner hub...there is the c-clip right before the roller bearing holder. you'll have to remove it first before you can pound out the roller bearing holder. also the roller bearing can be easily slide out.
