You're going to need a dyno or wide-band O2 (preferably both) to properly tune with the unit.

I've never used a vtec controller.. always thought i was a waste of money probably were better off dling crome or uberdata.. and wasting money on a pocket rom and chip burner to fully Tune your ecu rather then one part of the map.. and not even one part.. just the vtec part.. these's two different maps.. low and high cam and really to be honest with you a wideband is your best bet.. if you wanna **** in the wind bra... set your vtec to 4800-5100-5400-5700 and see how you like the gains.. i dunno how they work but if their for readjusting vtec.. try those.. setup you might like it.. most people with vtec controllers.. set it to that ****.. if your running a stock gsr manifold.
