Default I like this DIY alignment rack

If I only had the space to store one of these

I saw this at a local shop. It looks quite easy and fast to setup. It's got height adjustable feet to level it. Just drive the car up on the ramp and onto the pads, slide the alignment rack around to center it under the car, and voila.

That appears to be a nice setup. Note the centerline string. Clever.

That's a nice rig, and unfortunately it doesn't fold up. But, for an alignment shop that's okay since they don't need to move it anyway.

The problem with that is, you never really know if the car is lined up with the strings or not.

That's what the center string is for. You find the center line on your car and permanently mark it. Everytime you do an alignment, you drop a plumb line down from the marks and move the rack until the centerstring touches the plumbline.

Is that accurate to 1/32" though?

<shrug> I'm not sure, but I can't imagine it being any less acurate than a jackstands/conduit setup.

Here is why I like my setup: You can drive the car in and out of garage with it attached and make sure the suspension is settled, drive it back on the scales and check again. Plus it is light, portable and storable, and very cheap. And yes, it is accurate and gives consistent, repeatable measurements, and you can leave it attached while you adjust both camber and toe, and unlike jack stands and conduits, you can't really knock it out of place.
