Default 6x9 and 40w max head unit sounds better than same speakers with 50w RMS amp...

I remember when i was a lot poorer, I popped in a set of pioneer tsa-6999 6x9's and hooked them up to my old kenwood KRC-605 (40w x 4 max) with 12 gauge wire for fun, and remember thinking "Damn this bumps pretty darn well for 6x9's, almost like a small sub."

Thing is, that was before I had my JLw6, so anything sounded good...but even then i knew something was up.

My question is, with my 50x4 rms amp, the same 6x9's, either with 16 or 12 ga wire, dont seem to bump nearly as good as they did with the power coming from the head unit. What gives? I've tried all possible crossover frequencies and other variables.

The only thing that comes to mind is that the speakers have aged almost 4 years and my hearing has grown used to the sub...but i'm sure many of you have experienced something like this.
