Whats the proper break in period for a new Type-R motor?
I have heard a lot of different things. I'd say around 400-500 miles, maybe a little more even to be safe.
2000km of smooth driving....That`s a lot but the breaking in period decides almost everything what the engine is able to perform...

heh, i hadn't realized how much this question went away now that the ITRs aren't made anymore...kinda funny. Just make an effort to heat cycle the engine for the first 500-800 miles, don't let the revs stay in one place for too long (I.E., mix it up on the highway.), and gradually raise the redline.

That would be tough for me to do...the ITR would be as fast as a geo metro shifting at 2500 rpm.
But I agree, break it in properly and don't rag on your car when the engine is cold...your motor should last a long time following those two simple rules.
Maintenance wise: timing belt, oil and valve lashes...doing these three on schedule will keep that motor running strong.

i was under the impression each ITR was driven around preshipping over to the US on some sort of quality testing.

And boy was that some FUN!
The lowest mileage ITR that I have ever seen from the dealer was 14 km...which is approximately 9 miles.

HA!, I pulled away from the dealer in a cloud of tire smoke and never let go scince and it only had 12 miles on when I picked it up on 11/17/00 @ 7:15 pm.
And if ya don't beleive me, ask my Dad and my freind Pete who came to drop me off and take a look at what i did to myself (buying a ITR).

A mate of mine used to work for BMW UK as a body shop Tech. They used ot use all the M's to get from one side of the workshop to the other to go fetch the drinks at break. Also they had a massive car park where they stored new cars and there was a fight to get there early and donut the M5's. One M3 was left with less than 20 miles on the clock with metal showing on the rears....does that give you an idea????

Use a Honda engine oil filter ONLY!!!
Use a 30W, non-detergent, non-synthetic engine oil ONLY!!!
DO NOT take the engine over 3,500 RPM during the first 200 miles of operation. You can increase the maximum engine speed by 500 RPM for every additional 200 miles of operation.
DO NOT operate the engine in a "steady state" mode (no open-road driving).
Change the oil and filter after 1,000 miles of operation. Synthetic or non-synthetic engine oil can be used. We use, and recommend Mobil 1.

Brake in period: 600 miles at no more than 4,000 rpm. After that, gradually increase rpm shifts.
Complete brake in and settle down parts: After 15,000 miles, then can use synthetic motor oil.

The break in time is exactly 5.4 seconds after your front tire hits the road at the dealer. Unless your me, I dropped a strip pulling out of the parking space.

When I got my car new I took it easy for about 1000KM. No VTEC at all. Also I did not travel above 120Km/hr, the car didn't sound right.
After 1000km, I let go of the rules and the thing got stronger.
I switched out the motor oil at 3000KM to track the car, then switched out the oil again after the event, then switched out before dyno at 5000KM, then out again to track, then switched out for a track session at 7000KM, then out again, then finally synthetic at nearing 10000KM.
I've noticed no oil burning after the switch to Mobil 1 5w30. I was using Castrol 5w30 mineral oil before the switch to synthetic.
170whp stock with AC.
