Default Installed New Sway Bar Today

I tok some time to install a 23mm JDM ITR rear sway bar today and snapped a few photos along the way for those thinking of the ugrade. Install was very simple.

I took the car out for a short, spirited drive after the bar was installed - for those people that say you wouldn't feel a difference I have to disagree. I immediately felt the difference the bar provided - at some pont in the corner the back would come around way more than before. I'll give more of my impressions when I can drive the car in anger...

Stock bar (top) and JDM bar (bottom)

Stock (left) JDM (right)

Stock bar off

New bushings (left) vs. old bushings (right)

I wonder how much difference was due to the bushings and not the bar

On the JDM sway bars the bushings are OEM Honda and are the same hardness as stock. They just have a 23 mm hole to fit properly over the new bar.

The bar definitely reduces understeer.

My car has H&R sports, JDM 23mm rear sway bar, and, JDM rear upper strut bar. ANd let me tell you. My car is the most rotateable ITR I've driven yet. to the JDM sway bar.

A lot of people might think that a 1mm increase in diameter might not make that big of a difference. But, the 23mm JDM Type-R rear swaybar is 119% stiffer than the 22mm Type-R rear swaybar.

Do you mean 119% as stiff, meaning a little bit stiffer, or 119% stiffer, meaning more than twice as stiff? (I'm getting a stiffy after saying the word "stiff" so much...)

The swaybar stiffness can be expressed by this formula:

K = 1,125,000 (D^4) / L (B^2)

K is the rate of the swaybar in pounds per inch
D is the diameter of the swaybar
L is the length of the swaybar
B is the length of the swaybar arms (or moment arms)

Since the only thing that has changed is the diameter, you can take the diameter of the JDM Type-R rear swaybar and take it to the fourth power (23^4 = 279841). Then take the diameter of the stock Type-R rear swaybar to the fourth power (22^4 = 234256). Now divide the two amount to get the percentage of torsional increase ( 279841 / 234256 = 1.19).

BTW, thanks for correcting me Will (19% instead of 119%)

Hmmmm - Mugen 26 mm rear bar = 26^4 = 456976/234256 = 1.9507547

95%....now <u>that's</u> a difference

It wil but you have to reinforce your subframe or you'll tear it right out.

I thought this was discussed and the conclusion was reached that it would only tear out the subframe on civics and non type r integras? How do you reinforce the rear sub-frame?

You can use a 22mm USDM or 23mm JDM Type-R rear swaybar on all '94-'01 non-Type-R Integras, '92-'95 Civics (all models), '93-'97 Del Sols (all models). They all share the same rear suspension subframe. To mount the Type-R rear swaybar properly (ie. to prevent subframe tearout) to the cars mentioned, you will need to mount the swaybar DIRECTLY to the subframe (which is exactly how the Integra Type-R's rear swaybar is mounted). To mount the swaybar directly to the subframe, you will need a Type-R rear swaybar mounting kit. The mounting kit reinforces the subframe sheetmetal and allows the be mounted directly to the subframe. You can go to my webpage at http://www.geocities.com/bretq/mounting_kit.html for further information on my Type-R rear swaybar mounting kit (aka. BSQ mounting kit). For step-by-step instructions for installing the Type-R rear swaybar, go to http://www.geocities.com/bretq/swaybar_install.html . The instructions also provide all of the parts (with Acura part numbers) and tools necessary for the installation, along with pictures. By following these instructions, you will not have any problems with subframe damage (ie. tearout).

You can also use the search function on the Integra forum and search on 'BSQ kit' or 'BSQ sway' and you can read a ton of information on this subject.
