16" vs 17" Wheel/Tire Size Question
Looking for a little help with new wheels/tires. I'm looking at rota sliptreams in either 16" or 17", but it seems the real choice is what tire size do I want. For 16s I'd go with 225/40, with 17s it would be 215/40. My question for all the helpful people here: would the advantages of the 17's shorter side wall overcome the disadvantages of decreased width, increased cost and power to spin vs the 16s? According to GRM, I don't remember what issue, lap times on an auto-x track decreased with a reduction in sidewall, but I think this was with same width tires. Any info would help, thanks.

the GRM article used different width tires, making it a faulty test. of course a 205/45 is going to be faster than a 195/55!
an important part of the equation you're leaving out is the tire compound. i'm not really familiar with the 225/45 selection, cept that i know hoosier makes em. but a stickier 215/40 will be faster than a wider but not as sticky 225/45.
given the compounds are the same, the 225 will be faster, even with the increased moment of inertia and extra sidewall. especially for a heavy car like a lude, wider is better.
of course, there's always 235/40/17

For the 16 it looks like my tire choices are: Hankook R-S2, Yoko ES100, BFG KDW 2, and S-03s.
For the 17s: Kumho MX, S-03, RE040, RE750, Hankook R-S2, Falken RT-615, Yoko ES100 and Prada 2, Goodyear F1, BFG KDW 2, Dunlop FM901 and Maxx.
But with the MX and 615 in the last group, I'm leaning towards the 17s. ANy thoughts?

you can't compare nittos to the tires he's already mentioned. nittos aren't in the same league. they don't even play the same game.
heh, nitto vs. azenis 615. that's like me playing one on one with KG.

Well, I don't know anything about nitto tires, but the neogen is available in tbe 215/40/R17 size. It looks more like the 17s will win out based on tire selection. with the kook, 615 and mx. This leads to the next question, which tire would you recomend in the 215/40/R17 size? I've heard the MX>215, the 615>215, and the R-S2 is good based on contingency monies. So, I don't really know what to think.

personally, i'd go with the rs-2's because they're the cheapest. they've proven to be just as fast as the other 2. the 615 would probably be my second choice, since i think they're slightly stiffer than the MX and the RS-2, but still softer sidewalled than the 215's.
don't worry about contingency money just yet, unless you live in a really slow A/X region

I'm not worring about contingency money, yet, maybe someday though. That was just a positive I've heard about the kooks, and it's a fact, not opinion so I put it on my list. Thanks for thoughts bad-monkey.
