Default Engine Replaced Now Burning Oil

My nephew relaced the 1.5 engine in son's '92 Civic Hatchback. Now it's running great but burning oil. Tail pipe is really black. It blows black smoke on accelleration, gear-shifting, etc. ... but seems to run smoth. We have it parked til this is resolved. Tear in plastic timing belt cover gives me access to swab for oil... appears to be dry. Torn/blown oil seal? Advise??? Thanks.

Oil in tailpipe? or just black? could be running too rich and washing rings. Ck coolant temp sensor and PCV valve.

How much oil is it burning...

A small amount of black gunk on tail pipe is normal...

And when it smokes during shfting or acceleration, which color is the smoke? White, Blueish or black?

White - burning coolant
Black - running rich
Blueish - burning oil

try some sea foam you may just be burning off residual oil depending on how the engine was stored.

Okay, here's the update. We changed the PCV valve and the hose (was really gunked inside). Cranked it up. Runs smooth. But, still blowing light grey/bluish smoke. Coolant level is great. Doesn't run hot. Runs smooth. Burning oil, right? Piston rings? Before we tear the engine apart... Can it be anything else? Thx.
