Starter Spins - Engine Won't Crank
Whats up HT...
I was driving out of my driveway this morning, shifted into second, and all of a sudden I hear this weird noise for literally 1 second. It's really hard to explain but then my car stalled out right away. I tried to restart it - the starter just spins freely and the engine won't crank.
I decided to change the starter and see if that could be the problem, got a GSR starter and popped it on. Same problem - Starter just spins but engine won't turn at all.
Any ideas? Anything I should look at? I just need to narrow this stupid problem down.
Thanks in advance

What kind of flywheel do you have? If the starter spins and the engine doesn't I'd say that either the solenoid in the starter gave out (which we can kinda rule out since you swapped it out with an ASSUMED good starter) or the ring gear on your flywheel slipped off, which is rare but not impossible, especially w/a worn/cheap aftermarket flywheel. It could explain that noise you heard. Good luck! BTW, 95 is teal too! Nice low key color!
the starter spins the flywheel. If the engine isnt cranking, it isnt turing the flywheel. Sounds like a possible timing belt brake. starter turns, but no engine cranking. pull the valve cover and see.
BTW, if you're inclined, you can get under the car and take that cover off the tranny that goes over the flywheel by the oil pan. You'll be able to get a good view of what's going on with your flywheel. You will need to remove the engine-tranny brace(s) first. 17, 12 and 10mm sockets will be needed.
The starter I put in is defintily good...
I'm gunna go take the valve cover off and see if the timing belt broke. I hope not though.
If the timing belt is good, I guess its pretty much the flywheel problem with the ring? It's a stock flywheel with stock clutch and pressure plate. Car has been running perfect since I got it until today and this happened.
btw: Teal owns all!!

Yeah after reading the other guys' posts, I'm inclined to go with there diagnosis. Factory flywheels are pretty hardy. Not likely the ring came off. A broken timing belt would make it sound like the engine isn't turning: part of it is but there's no compression which would make it sound like it isn't turning at all. Threw me off.
Check this while you crank (with an assistant, of course). It can save the time of pulling the valve cover off: is the crank pulley spinning? If it is, take the oil cap off. Do you see the rockers moving? If not then your t-belt is broken. How long's it been on there?

Damn i hope your engine is safe from all that cranking. Hopefully you didnt damage any of your internal stuff. What kind of compression are ya runnin? crossin my fingers for ya
Took off the valve cover and I was sorry to see my Timing Belt shredded.
Now I know what my problem is - I just hope I didn't damage any internal parts when it snapped. I was at low RPM and it turned off right away. I had the car towed to a local shop who does great work. I just don't have the time/patience to do a timing job myself so I figured let them do it, and have it come out good instead of me messing it up even more.
Motor has 152,000 on the clock - Previous owner stated timing belt was done at 96,243 miles.
What would make the timing belt go so quickly?
Thanks for the support everyone lol - pray for me that nothing inside broke!!!!

going to a shop that uses a cheap napa or autozone replacement belt. it happened on my old 300zx. cheap timing belt lasted 40k miles of mostly highway driving. it had the "lifetime warranty" which they pro rated and i wound up getting a check for like 35 bucks. cost me 400 to have it installed.

you might have some hope; i bought my old dsm through a mechanic who told me the t-belt had stripped away at the crank, causing the bottom end to spin just fine, but the valves to not open or close. believe it or not, i put on a new belt and everything was fine; everybody knows that when the belt breaks on dsms, you should have 16 new valves in your future
Ouch...$400 is a hit
anyone know a ballpark price for a T-belt job on an Integra?
I wish I could sacrifice the car for a few weeks and just get a gsr longblock but I hate downtime on my car especially since I already have a talon sitting
Thanks HT

So i've been thinking since the shop isnt gunna touch my car until next week..
If im gunna spend up to $400 bucks on a timing job for my motor - why not just buy a B20 block and use my tranny and everything else.
I'm considering this because my current LS motor has blown rings so theres not much sense in dumping money into it when I can spend another 300 and get the b20.
Question is: Will i feel a noticable difference in the b20 motor with LS trans?
