Default a few problems with my VX.

to start, 1992 VX hatchback bone stock (ish)

first off:
at higher speeds (like 130, 140 ish Km/h) my steering over-reacts to everything and at a stand-still theres play in the steering system, what can this be?
i have made a list of thing that can influence an answer to this question:
NO p/s
front discs, rear drums
front tires: michelin 175/70/13
rears: winters (i know, but im broke) 175/70/13
rims: stock alloy 13" VX rims

secondly:
during the same trip, the platic peice next to the rad, infront of the header broke off and melted onto the header. while slowing down to a stop, i noticed a HUGE black cloud of smoke coming from the engine bay. poped the hood and it was the damn plastic piece. i tore it off and kept going. my question is: is this peice essential? or can i do without it? and how much for a new one?

thirdly:
my cluster doesnt light up from time to time and the fise is fine.

thanks,
TL

Ok, I have a VX...to answer your first question. It's a manual steering rack, and doing 80 and trying to make quick driving corrections will make an car over react in some way or another. It's best to be a smooth as possible when steering at that speed, so no jerky movement. Another thing it might be to, is the fact the your tires have such a big side wall that when the car rolls to one side and then rolls to the other, the tall soft side walls will make it snap over to that side, I do it in my mom's TL all the time lol. Smaller profile and better quality tire should help with that. And my steering wheel has play in it too, I guess its a manual rack thing lol.

Second question, I took that plastic piece out and it's been 2 years since I did it, no problems, if anything alittle more air is gettin into the engine bay and would keep it cooler, that was my reasoning behind removing it. And there is no such thing as a new one of those pieces, only junkyard crap lol.

With the cluster, i had that problem too, just hit the dash where the dimmer switch worked for me until i soldered the switch so it's always on full brightness wherever it lights are on.

yea i sorta baught it, therefore i have it, not like i can return it like a blockbuster movie (haha no late fees) ... but i like it anyway

P.S. check the civic weight thread, CX/VX are the lightest (the CX is lighter cuz it dont have alloys stock)

My VX does all those too, and they are nothing major. For my gauges not coming
on I just hit the dash on top of the cluster and that seems to work.

The point of the VX was to make it as light as possible, this is why it has the alloys and no other model does, for gas savings. The VX is one of the most fuel efficient gasoline cars of our time.

Until '94 the VX and CX weighed exactly the same, '94 and '95 models are where it varied with the VX being lighter.

1 it could be your lower control arm bushings. i have a vx and mine were all chewed up it made my wheel go crazy on the highway. so try that.
2 since you live in canada just get a eg6 jdm gauge cluster it will work perfect for you. i live in the states and i had to get use to km/h.
3 the plastic peice forget you had it, you dont need it.

Um you have to take out the dimmer switch and on the bottom side, I soldered the two electrical ponits above the chip that says "333" on it. I also soldered the two electrical points that belong too the three prongs that the plug goes too. Sorry i dont have a digital camera. If someone wants to post a picture of the bottom side of the dimmer switch i can show what needs to be soldered. And getting a new gauge won't fix that, I tried it didn't work only soldering did.
