Fabric under hood?
On my friends 2 door accord the fabric under the hood was all chewed up. We assumed it was from an animal since her car hadnt been driven in a while. My question is what is that fabric used for?
I thought I heard that the fabric is fireproof and the plastic pins that hold it on have a low melt temp so that if there is a fire under the hood, the pins will melt and the fabric will smother the fire.
Another buddy of mine says that its only perpose is to deaden the engine noise.
Do any of you have a true answer as to what purpose this serves because if its just a sound deadening material, we will rip it out.

I heard about the fireproof thing at some dealer when I was looking at cars with my parents. I think it might have been toyota/lexus that's fabric is fireproof. Of course, the way dealers are today they could have made that up but it seems to make some sense.
Actually, when I worked at Honda years ago, American Honda sent us some info about all the new models at the time. The sound deadening material was, in fact, listed as a fire-extinguishing material. The plastic pins are supposed to melt, allowing the material to drop down on top of the engine bay to help smother any fire.
How well it really works is another matter... I've seen pics of an Accord engine bay after a small fire (on H-T actually), and it's obvious that the sound deadening material had fallen and coated the engine bay, but who knows how much it actually helped to put the fire out.

it also does bring the noise level down aswell i have noticed....humm
