Default Filter on throttle body??

Is it better to run the filter directly on the throttle body or should you have some type of piping?

I just did this tonight and it sounds mean as **** but I cant really feel a difference over when I had the short ram.

Does it make any power over that since the air has to travel a lesser distance. Or does the piping itself help reduce turbulence? ( I have heard ). And when you have piping there is like a resivoir of air inside of the piping itself?

Does anyone even understand what I'm getting at? Im just wondering in theory does it make a difference or should I put the piping back on?

Wouldnt the air be really hot?

So you have a hotter-er air intake? I dont get the point of short rams vs the stock airbox. Sure you get more air, but its underhood hot air. -Shrugs-

Its funny to the big lifted trucks that people have. They swap out the stock air intake that comes from the wheel fender and put a huge K and N one under the hood, sucking up all that hot *** air. Blows my mind.

Yea the air would be really hot. Yes the pipe would cut down on turbulence a lot. THe only good thing would be better throttle response.

Youre right the cheapest and one of the best solutions is to just take the stock resonator out.

right, the air is alot hotter.

but a short ram will make more power over the stock intake system.....

no but the question is.

what is better filter on tb, or ram air?

Does air temp really make that much of a difference?

does air temp make a difference? of course it does.

my honda runs and sounds extra mean on ice cold days.

i wonder how much hotter the air is, right by the tb?

anyone got an idea?

I saw something posted sometime last year about pipe length and dyno numbers.

They used a CAI, short ram, and filter on the TB.

The CAI dyno'd the best numbers, the short ram in 2nd, and the filter on TB was the worst. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the filter on the TB was just as bad, if not worse, than using the stock intake.

Something to do with intake temps & how the air travels. Something to do with mass & velocity of the air going into the TB.

With the filter directly on the TB you get all the air you could want (Mass), but there is no velocity, as there is with a CAI.

Yea...I would atleast get a short ram...it's gotta be better than just a filter on the throttle body...

Yea I'd say definetly go with a short ram over just the filter on the TB

Depends on your piping.

uhh just so you know when the car is moving there is virtually no difference in air temp from a CAI, a short ram, and a filter on the t/b so that has no pertinence to this argument. I would be more worried about air turbulence and the loss of power in the lower rpm's because of the less restriction (scavenging affect).

I rocked filter on throttle body for a month or two. It sounded cool and VTEC hit hard but I feel a slight performance increase with my ebay short ram.

I wouldn't run it like that. Like said before air turbulence is what is going to kill your power. The short ram will be alot better and a CAI is really not much better. When the car is moving the air temp. under the hood is not much different then outside.

So basically with a filter on the tb, the temp isnt that much different but, there is more turbulence causing a loss of low rpm power..???

Whatdoes it do to high end power?
I personally didnt notice a difference at all but it sounds so much better..

back when i had my si, i had a two-piece cold air intake, where i could run either cold air or short-ram. I tried both out and i liked the short ram better. why? cause when you're moving, it really doesn't make a difference where you're getting the air from. to prove this to myself, i raced my friends v6 tibureon. first i raced him with cold air, and then i raced him with short-ram. i saw no difference what so ever between the two piping styles. I then decided to keep short-ram cause of the throttle response. think about hard hard it is to breathe with a snorkel as opposed to breathing out of your nose/mouth. I think, and still think that if one wants to make their car faster, they need to quit dicking around with bolt-ons and start playing with engine internals, weight reduction, reducing rotational inertia, and gearing.

sri or cai > filter on tb

even though you'll have around the same air temps w/ the sri, you'll have more velocity. cai does make a big difference though, the colder the air the better.
