when is wide too wide?
I have a couple of people on a local forum trying to tell me that a 18 x10 inch rim will help out the handling and launching of a mr2...i completely think different because the rim seems to be way to big to help more than hinder...am i thinking logically, or is it correct to still use the "wider is better" term in this situation?
18" on a toyota MR2? I highly doubt that huge rim is going to help on launching. You probably won't even be able to generate enough heat in the tire to even help on launching. Wider is not always better like I mentioned you have to be able to get enough heat in the tire for it be benefical. Even with handling the Mr2 probably isn't even heavy enough to get enough heat in the tires.

18x10 is friggin huge..17x9 is more than enough imo...

it is possible for a too wide tire. If one is to wide the cars weight will be distributed over a wider area thus reducing traction. Have you seen tires used on snow and ice rally cars? They are literly smaller than a 185 width tire but with spikes. A cre member explained the reasoning about the small width and he said cuz more of the cars weight is pressing on the smaller surface area pushing the tire down further, think about a snow shoe concept wider you dont sink, skinnyer you will
Having that large of a rim would be a terrible choice for launching a car. Fist of all the rotational mass is very high. Second, the tire you will be putting on the 18 will not have much sidewall. May be better for cornering but very bad for launching a car as the tire cannot bite as hard as a tire with a larger sidewall.

Depends (Fender flares) those 330/30/18 have 5 inches of side wall.
Rotational inertia.... oh well sacrifices are made for grip.
That snow rally stuff doesn't apply because there using spikes .

general rule. fit the smallest wheel that will fit over the brakes. sidewalls will help with your overall grip and launching. if you look under those jgtc cars they have huge rotors and calipers. they need big brakes to clear them, but at the same time they don't have 35 series tires. they have highly modified fenders and large sidewalls.
