Default How to tune timing with EGT

or...can you really?

If I choose to install EGT gauge as a monitoring device, what should I look for? If hottest EGT is at 14.7:1 stoich AFR, then what good is it?

How will too much retard or advance timing affect EGT?

Too much retard will usually yiled higher EGTs.

the extra load created by advancing and/or retarding will yield you higher egt's

From what I've read on other sites and hear, it really shouldn't be used as a tuning tool, but just to keep in check that you are doing the tuning correctly and nothing is out of control. You don't wanna aim for much with an EGT guage, but when you are adjusting timing make sure the EGT's don't go past a certain point....get it? Always good to have though

egt is gonna more of a safety tool, like adseguy said. you wanna make sure you dont melt pistons and that type of stuff!!

The only time you would really tune EGT's is if you have one for each cyilnder and you have individual ignition trims.

So let me get this straight in my head. Advancing and retaring timing moves the power power band left and right one the dyno graph. But when you are tunning you need to watch your EGT so that you don;t cook anything in the motor. At what temp would you start to cook internals.

What's a temperature range that is a warning sign for B18C1 engine, suppose I install the EGT at the manifold runner?
How much estimated temperature drop if I put it 6 inch after the turbo?
