death of a resonator
i've been considering the comptech icebox, but first i thought i might tear into the stock intake and see if there were any improvements to be made. i believe i have created something similar to the icebox, now i'm just waiting on the new k&n 2427 to complete the fun!
here is the stock resonator. it's heavy, inefficient, and damn near indestructible.
yep, gotta give a nod to the nc/fl guys.
the resonator is very tough to disassemble, but i was successful. this is the stock tubing that goes from the airbox down to the fenderwell; half of it is molded into the resonator.
my implements of destruction. my roomate loves when i do dirty car stuff on the kitchen counter.
here is the stock tube. it goes from the airbox down into the fenderwell. i'm getting cold air.
unfortunately, there are no brackets to hold the air tube in place. it rattles (not audible in the cabin) and i don't think it could fall out, but i don't want to take the chance. this is a home depot bracket, it cost around $2.00; plumber's tape would do the same job.
i pulled the bracket really tight and attached it to the same hole just vacated by the resonator, i reused the screw/rubber thingy too.

i drove to home depot with the tube dangling in there. i didn't notice any change in noise or power, but i didn't really get into vtec and i don't think butt dynos can realize a change of less than 5whp. i don't expect too much change from stock, but i'm quite happy and i don't think there is any need to get an icebox. i'm going to the gym shortly and will do all the crazy testing expected after a new "mod." right now i'm defrosting, i did this outside in 35deg weather (i only have 1 day off per week).
oh yeah, does anyone know the cost for the stupid plugs that hold in the fender lining? they didn't react well to being pulled out in cold weather.

Nice job man
I'm gonna be doing this to my intake system once I get the ITR airbox. AEM is driving me nuts and the fact that I gotta take apart the bumper to clean the filter is not cool.

Good work man, this is exactly what I did to my Si when I had it. The difference isn't night and day, but it was noticeable on the B16A2. Who needs a resonator that's just for noise control anyways?
It might be different for the EK, but on the Integra, you can remove the front passenger wheel and get access for filter removal by moving aside the fender splash shield. I know, still a pain in butt but I imagine it's easier than removing the bumper. Hope this helps/works.

just did a did a highway run. there is definitely more of a growl prior to vtec, but the big cam sounds pretty much the same. it's hard to say if there is a change powerwise, especially since tonight is drier and colder than normal. nonetheless, i shortened the intake tract well over 12" and removed a restriction. i figure the money i didn't spend on the icebox will go towards a header.
haha, nice work, toda party! history repeats itself. my first thought was to use a sledgehammer but i don't have one and the only bat i have is the wiffle variety. i rather enjoyed giving the stupid resonator i hard slow death. i recommend getting plumber's tape from home depot and supporting the intake tube.
the banana, hmmm, well you know.....the girl friend has been away for a week. at least it wasn't wrapped in tin foil a la spinal tap.
