oil filter compatability
b/c the normal pt7 filters and the newer plm A02 filters are made by fram and filtech which are both not very well made.
The s2000pcx is make by toko roki filters in japan and are substantially better.
If you guys for sure know that the 15400-pcx-04 work on a b18c5 then it will for sure work on the d16a6.
The reason why I know this is b/c in the past before I learned of oil filter differences from honda I was already using the factory integra type R oil filter on my crx.
Thanks

I am pretty sure that one honda filter will fit on 99% of their honda/acura cars. So I am going to say that it works, I am about 95% sure on that.

i read a definitive review of the quality of the oil filters. The pt7 honda filter is made in canada by fram and when cut open its end plates are glue cardboard. The PLM A02 filter is made in the US by Filtech and although its is better it still doesn't measure up nearly as good as the PCX filter.
The PCX filter is much heavier, has more pleats, has steel welded end caps and such.
I would post the weblink to the guy that reviewed this but I can't find it anymore.
But seriously I have seen these filters cracked open myself and yes there is a HUGE difference.
Buy the PCX ones if you can.

Here's what we found when we cut apart several filters for Hondas:
http://effinmotorworks.com/Filters.htm
The differences were enough to convince me to use only the HAMP/S2000 filters on my Hondas. They DO fit the D16a6 just fine.
Do they definitely filter better? Can't say. But for a few extra bucks every 3000 miles, it's a little bit more peace of mind... I find them worth the money, no doubt about it.

was it this site?

i read that about a year ago, interesting read, and afterwards, i went out and cut open all our filters, and it was all right.

there are 2 filters that hondas use.
lets call em 58
and 82
all hondas 88-about 01 use the 58 filter. it is more fatter and it is probably the one u are familiar with
the newer hondas 02+ use the 82 filter. the seal and threads are the same as the 58 but it is significantly smaller in size and a little longer.
both filters are interchangeable and it is rumored that the 82 filter will give you higher oil pressure

s2k filter is 100% useable on B, D, F, and H series. i know since my 92 accord has one that i put. my CRX d15b VTEC has one. and all the b series i have been putting together for friends i have installed them.
the filter in more desirable since it has a larger casing and thus more filter area and flow. the small case ones that Honda superseeeded the part numbers for are made by Fram/Honeywell(same company)
the Filtech ones are a little better but still small case. i use a hose clamp around the filer itself to keep the walls from flexing, which i have heard from road racers that helps with pressure drop. but don't quote me since that would hard to prove
current b20/vtec i am working on

There are multiple Honda oil filter sizes, manufacturers and quality. Using a part number can get tricky. Honda periodically changes the manufacturer they order parts from and when they do, a new p/n is generated.
Look up filters in an OEM parts catalog and it will kick back several part numbers and then further confuse you with cross reference newer replacement numbers as the manufacturer changed through the years.
The Filters
pre 1988: The biggest, fattest filters I've seen for a Honda. They are not compatible with later model years. I'm aware of two different manufacturers, Toyo Roki and Filtech.
1988-present: Available in two different sizes. The good news is that that they are physically interchangeable.
I'll call the first one "Large" for the sake of this article. If you went down to Honda dealership and asked for an oil filter, you could have gotten one by Filtech, Toyo Roki, or even Fram. All 88+ Hondas were using this filter size/type until around 2001.
Honda started phasing out "Large" in favor of a newer, smaller filter that I'll simply call "Small". It is manufactured by Honeywell.
With the introduction of Small, it came to the attention of a lot of people that the s2000 was getting a different oil filter(and still is) then the rest of the Honda line. Dimensionally the same as Large and made by Toyo Roki. I'll refer to this one as PCX(from the p/n). The PCX is also sold as the larger JDM HAMP with a different color shell.
Personal observations/interpretations
There are four different part numbers for Large(that I could find), each representing a different manufacturer. In the last couple years leading up to the introduction of Small, you could only get the Filtech or Fram filters. This leads me to believe it was bean counter decision to no longer offer the earlier Toyo Roki in favor of the less expensive Fram. If they save .50 on the wholesale of every oil filter and still charge the customer the same, that's a lot of money.
And to be clear, its not the same radioactive orange Fram oil filter you would buy off the shelf at Wal-Mart. It was made to Honda specs, but I'm sure there were trade offs to achieve a specific budget.
But Toyo Roki is back with the PCX and it is a higher quality then the older Fram/Filtech filter. Its almost a non-issue since you can't really get the old Large filters anymore. Your OEM choices these days are the PCX or Small.
Now, I can't speak to the quality of Small because I haven't cut one open, but it bears mentioning that its made by Honeywell. A division of Allied Signal. Who also owns Fram. Hmm.
What it boils down to...use whatever you feel comfortable with. Use a quality oil and change it every 3000 miles and you should be fine.
I'll admit, this is an incedibly **** subject. Whenever I get an opportunity, I'll ask a dealership parts or tech guy what they think and I get responses that range from "What a fruitcake?" to "Are you sure?" to "Interesting."
I personally won't use a Fram filter. Not after cutting one open. I think the Toyo Roki filter is the way the engineers wanted the filter and the accountants forced them to compromise.
My local dealership is charging around $6 for the PCX filter. Most of the cheap off the shelf aftermarket filters are $4-6. If I have to spend $2 for my piece of mind, its a bargain.
a little off topic but look at your post number davens, mark of the beast

I can vouche for 91civiclx, I too work for a big auto shop and have done plenty of memorizing and looking up various filters.
Now HONDA uses more than those two filters but our concerns are ONLY with the ones used from 1988-2000 which is the 58 he talks about and the 2001+ which use the 82 and like mentioned they are completely interchangeable. For your B18 motor I would highly recommend the MOBIL 1 oil filter. I along with almost everybody I'm friends with and people I work with (including ALLMOTORPACMAN who was the owner of a K20 CRX) use it an are happy with our experiences with it.
The 58 and 82 are just reference numbers or the numbers they probably use at 91civic's shop, we used the numbers from mobil : 88-2000 is MO4459 (Mobil 1 # M1-104) and 2001+ is MO4610 (Mobil 1 # M1-110) Hope this helps you.Mobil 1 is just my preference but feel free to use what u like, and STAY AWAY from fram.

I work at a Honda Dealer and we use 2 filter on all the cars that come in... everything gets the small Filtech filter except the S2K which get the bigger Toyo Roki. I personally use a S2K filter and it works fine
BTW:
S2K Toyo Roki # 15400-PCX-004
Small Filtech # 15400-PLM-A02
